For anyone drawn to vivid colors in nature, leafhoppers rival coral reef fish in brilliance. There are about 6,000 reef fish species on Earth—but an estimated 120,000 leafhoppers. The variety is staggering, and only a third have been described. This one is Macunolla ventralis. #insectphotography

New story on Notes from the Road: Sidi Bou Said and the Fantastical Seaside Villages.

Wandering the white-and-blue alleys of this Tunisian cliff town, I tried to understand what makes certain places feel imagined, and why those places are important.

I’ve been thinking a lot about seaside villages and what they represent in human culture. I photographed this quiet street in Rovinj, Croatia—one of those rare coastal towns that crosses a threshold from merely beautiful to truly fantastical. My latest Substack is about this very idea. #croatia

This tiny hummingbird—the Violet-headed Hummingbird—weighs about as much as a paperclip.

The more time you spend with #hummingbirds, the more you notice how uniquely each one wears light. This species is known for a violet, almost electric purple head when seen straight on, but I love the sideview.

Ridge-headed #Salamander, Cartago Province, Costa Rica. This strange, beautiful and sculptural creature belongs to the family Plethodontidae, the lungless salamanders, a lineage that breathes entirely through the skin and the moist tissues of the mouth.

Morning in Sidi Bou Said: quiet streets, cobalt balconies, and just a hint of a breeze.

This late summer, I shot 37,000 photos of water droplets from garden sprinklers. I may not have produced that much during this time, but it was one of the most instructive times for me, and every once in a while, an image that depicted order in the universe would appear, and I was happy with that.

King Roger II built this cathedral a thousand years ago to prove his divine right. So many empires have laid claim to Cefalù’, Sicily since then, yet all have fallen. What remains is one of the world's most beautiful seaside villages, and our duty to defend democracy wherever it lives. #NoKings

This quiet October scene from #Portland is one of my favorites, the way the rain brings the plants to life, turning every surface to green. I've been documenting the PDX ICE protests, and those photos have now reached over 3 million views. Gallery here:

These paper-thin sandstone layers in South Coyote Buttes formed 190 million years ago from ancient dunes turned to rock. Each sheet marks a shift in wind or moisture. Even careful visitors can cause damage, so limiting access helps preserve these fragile formations.

There will come a day when power believes it can cage compassion.
That day is now.

And yet the rain falls — relentless, cleansing, defiant —
upon a people who will not kneel.

We do not hide behind crowns or guns;
we stand beneath clouds and banners of art.

From this place of rivers and bridges,
we send our signal across mountains.
Let every city that believes in freedom lift its voice.
The beacons of the West are lit.
Seattle — we see you. Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego — we see you.
Your time has come. Our time has come.

This is the Pacific Wren — once thought to be the same as wrens of the East, Europe, and Asia. When scientists finally listened, they heard a different song and found a new species in plain sight. In #Portland, as we resist Trumps militarized fantasy, we remind the world that difference is strength.

Behind these sand dunes are the monoliths that hold one of the Southwest’s deepest puzzles: why were the Pueblo forced to flee into up ? Maybe the mystery is whether you’ll find an answer. #photography

The heat in Birgu settles into its alleys in the evening, when the local cats search for cool surfaces to rest on. I found this alley cat stretched across the roof of a car, unbothered by the world, in one of the old streets of Malta’s historic Birgu.
