Currently replaying Pokemon Fire Red and hunting for a shiny magikarp. @nokthegoat.bsky.social and I did the math. It takes ~20 seconds per encounter. It will take ~190 hours of fishing just magikarp to have a 95% chance of a shiny appearing at some point. Send help.

I owe a lot of my early understanding of people, relationships, and power to Ursula K. Le Guin. A Wizard of Earthsea (the whole series) and The Left Hand Of Darkness are still some of the best books I've ever read.
