Proud El Pasoan, husband, father, & SpEd teacher serving as NEA Secretary-Treasurer, the nations largest labor union, committed to the success of public education & workplace democracy through our unions.
Border educator. Parent. Son of immigrants.
El Paso is my hometown — my family has been here for 140+ years.

Due process is the guardrail of democracy. I applaud Judge Briones for defending constitutional rights for all.
On Tyranny warned us: deny rights to some, and none are protected.
El Paso judge: Trump-backed immigration appeals rulings deny migrants long-standing bond rights
An El Paso federal judge says immigration appeals rulings that curtailed bond hearings have driven a record surge of habeas corpus cases as detained migrants seek release in federal court.

As a public school parent + educator: I teach democracy, not obedience. The Boston Tea Party was illegal — now we call it patriotism. When students protest, education is working. Using state power to punish schools for that is authoritarian overreach. Dissent is American. Silence is not.
February 1, 2026 at 8:54 PM
Boston Tea Party truth we must teach honestly:
It was illegal. That’s the point.

Protest has always challenged unjust power — and today is no different.

Protest is American.
Silencing dissent is not.

Governor Abbott said “recalibrate.”
We agree.
Let’s recalibrate the Governor’s Mansion-starting in March, finish in November.🗳️

Schools should be safe—not places of fear.
Students deserve to learn without intimidation.
ICE out of our schools, in MN and everywhere.

As a parent and educator, I’m outraged. A 5-year-old child allegedly used as bait by ICE. This is authoritarian behavior—exactly what On Tyranny warns us about. When power targets children, democracy is already under attack.

Educators are organizing — again — to protect students.

On Jan 23, I’m wearing blue in solidarity with Minnesota educators calling for ICE out of our schools. Schools must be safe spaces rooted in trust, not fear.

Stand with Minnesota. 💙

Day 3 at CNTE offered a warning rooted in history.

Educators from across Latin America connected past repression to today’s attacks on academic freedom and unions—often disguised as “neutrality” or “reform.”

This is why educators organize.
Public education is democracy in action.
January 18, 2026 at 4:50 PM
Day 2 at CNTE in Brazil, educators chanted:
“FORA TRUMP DA AMÉRICA LATINA” — Trump out of Latin America.
A message rooted in lived experience.
Education isn’t neutral. Democracy doesn’t defend itself.
When educators organize globally, authoritarianism loses ground. ✊🏽🌎

Day 1 at the 35th CNTE Congress: democracy is fragile, public education is under attack, & educators are on the frontlines.

From Brazil to the U.S., we’re resisting privatization & authoritarianism—together.
Educators don’t just teach democracy.
We defend it. ✊🏽📚🌎

Schools must be places of safety — not fear.
We stand with Education Minnesota demanding ICE stay out of our schools.
Every child deserves dignity, stability, and the freedom to learn.
ICE unlawfully detained one of our members and used pepper spray on high school students shortly after shooting and killing a Minneapolis woman yesterday.

We demand they stay away from our schools. Immediately.

As educators, we must speak out against war and militarism.
Military intervention violates sovereignty, international law, and the democratic principles we teach.

The people of Venezuela deserve self-determination—not violence.
Fund education, not war. 📚✏️
Unimos nuestra voz y apoyo 📢

Every single child deserves to be celebrated, loved, and supported for who they are—nothing less. It is the place of parents and doctors to secure the care that their children need, not politicians.

Shame on the administration for standing in the way.

Honored to keynote NEA’s leadership seminar in Denver.
At a time when immigrant communities are attacked & public education is under threat, educators must organize, build community, & lead with courage.

So inspired seeing educators celebrate earning & maintaining National Board Certification. Having watched Patty do it & mentor others, I know the sacrifice behind it. Congrats NBCTs—students rise because you invest in yourselves. Proud NEA is a founding partner. ✨🍎

Honored to moderate at the EI Global Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Brussels.

A clear takeaway:
Educators and our unions must lead how AI is used in schools — not tech companies or policymakers.

Today marks 50 years of IDEA — a law that changed lives, including mine as a special education teacher and a dad of a student with an IEP.
I’m grateful for IDEA, but not for Congress’ 50 years of broken promises.
It’s time to FULLY FUND IDEA NOW.

What a country funds is what it values. If we can afford endless war but not a Department of Education, we’re choosing fear over opportunity.

Our children—and our democracy—deserve better.
