🧵 With the warm end of September, followed by four days in the 80°s early in October, one might have wondered when fall weather was going to arrive in New Jersey. By now, we know that by mid-month a transition to cooler weather arrived.

🧵 New Jersey's September 2025 temperature averaged 68.1°. This was 1.2° above the 1991–2020 normal and ranked as the 16th warmest September since records commenced in 1895. Ten of the twenty warmest Septembers have occurred since 2010.

August and summer 2025 weather conditions vacillated between heat with plenty of humidity to cool and quite pleasant. In the mix were also some local extreme storms with damaging impacts, while there were also some extended dry intervals. (1/7)

Tragically, this July demonstrated how weather danger lurks across the Garden State during summer months. July thunderstorm winds felled trees that resulted in three fatalities, lightning strikes killed two and injured others, and flash flooding took two lives and put countless others in...(1/7)

Looking back at the past month, or the first half of this year for that matter, “mysterious,” “puzzling,” or “difficult to understand” may best describe what has transpired when it comes to New Jersey’s weather and climate behavior. In other words, enigmas. (1/8)

It took a frustratingly long time for the cool season “recharge” of New Jersey’s water resources to get well underway. Following a record dry fall 2024, December through April precipitation remained below normal, including the third driest January of the past 131 years. (1/9)

If it is weather variety you enjoy, April 2025 certainly must have proved rather satisfying. Atmospherically, this was expressed by a cool, wet first half of the month and a warm, dry second half. (1/7)

In cooperation with @dep.nj.gov Geological and Water Survey, an updated version of the extreme monthly temperature and precipitation figure has been posted on the ONJSC website (https://njclimate.org , or go directly to... (1/5)

Some Marches in past years have kept you guessing when, sometimes even if, spring will arrive. That certainly was not the case this year, nor, for that matter, has it been much so in recent years. (1/8)

Statewide, February precipitation (rain and melted snow) averaged 2.53”. This is 0.33” below the 1991–2020 normal and ranks 50th driest since 1895. The precipitation was quite evenly distributed across the state, although the northwest came in on the drier side. (1/6)

The first month of 2025 was cold, dry, and windy. It was the coldest January since 2014, one of the driest of the past 131 years, dew points dropped below zero or into the single digits on 23 days, and winds gusted to 40 mph or higher on 16 days. (1/6)
February 6, 2025 at 10:25 PM
Brrr! It was a very cold morning across the state, with below-zero daily minimum temperatures found in the northwestern counties, and single-digit lows in the rest of the state (with the exception of more urban and coastal locals, which generally dropped into the low/mid teens). (1/3)

The theme of “pressure” (the title of this month's report) was selected to define the last month of 2024. In an absolute sense, this refers to a mid-December period with the highest atmospheric pressure recorded in New Jersey in over 40 years. (1/11)

For the 16th consecutive year, we in the state climate office have evaluated the myriad daily, monthly, and annual observations gathered across New Jersey during the course of the year to choose what we feel were the most significant and impactful 10 weather and climate events of 2024. (1/6)

Following a remarkably dry, record-breaking October, and the two driest consecutive months on record, you had to wonder if November would have anything of note to add to a rather peculiar fall. In short, it did not disappoint. Drought continued (but it precipitated!), warmth prevailed, and... (1/5)

Our first snowfall of the winter is in the books! Along with measurable snow in the far-northern part of the state (especially at higher elevations), the weather system that affected the entire state from November 20th-22nd provided our first widespread, significant precipitation in months. (1/6)

New Jersey has transitioned into a worrisome drought situation following historically low October precipitation. So, too, was the September–October combined total a record low. (1/8)
