A lot of folks told me they only backed Trump because he was “non-intervention” and “anti-regime change” and “no more foreign wars.”
Now he’s attacked Venezuela, kidnapped Maduro, and says the U.S. will “run” the country while tapping and selling its oil.
Y’all still feeling good about that pitch?
January 3, 2026 at 7:54 PM
Well, at least we aren’t pretending it’s about WMDs this time, I guess… 🤷🏻

“President Donald Trump insisted the U.S. government would run the country at least temporarily and would tap Venezuelan’s vast oil reserves to sell ‘large amounts’ to other countries.”

“It's been a long December and there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can't remember all the times I tried to tell myself
To hold on to these moments as they pass”

My good friend Gary Tyer passed away a year ago from early onset dementia. He was an amazingly talented musician and even better friend. I wrote about him here: tcspress.com/2025/04/02/o... And if you'd like to check out some of his music: tyer.bandcamp.com/album/shackl...

“The deterioration isn’t due to age alone. I have some standing to talk about this frankly. I was born 10 days after Trump. My gray matter isn’t what it used to be, either, but I don’t say whatever comes into my head.”

Like any bully, Trump is fundamentally a coward. When he feels humiliated, he lashes out. Every authoritarian action he is taking must be understood against the backdrop of his declining popularity. He feigns strength, but he's operating from a place of weakness.

Two people are murdered and this is how the president responds. Not with empathy or leadership, but with mockery and self-worship. It’s a moral abyss and he keeps digging. Anyone still defending this ethically bankrupt, frightened, sad little excuse for a man is telling you exactly who they are.

On Writing While Listening to Miles Davis as My Family Watches Batman in the Next Room
I didn’t mean to write about a room, but that’s what I ended up writing about, along with records, Batman, a snarky record store clerk, and a few other small detours.

I don’t always write poems about Trump and creeping authoritarianism. See? Here’s a lighthearted one about a naked philosopher telling a king to get out of his sunlight… shit. There might still be a metaphor in there somewhere.

My daughter Phoebe and I had a poem published at Collaborature this week. We wrote it together when she was 9, using those little magnets you arrange to form sentences on the fridge, which of course makes it my favorite poem ever!

FIFA gave #Trump the geopolitical version of a youth-soccer participation medal. The “you tried, champ, but please stop yelling about the Nobel Prize now” award. ⚽🏅 He’ll probably throw another super-rad military parade to celebrate his "great achievement."
