I nicked this book from the bedside table of my in-laws guestroom years ago and finally, recently read it in depth. It’s a bit dated now but it does trace the road taken since in consciousness and self studies. Recommend (glad I stole it)!

People made risky decisions about pain for others. They were more cautious, more generous, and systematically overestimated others' pain. In the brain, pain risk tracked with responses in the dorsal striatum, with a higher response for others' han to one's self.
