Taking about boycotting, I want to bring back the issue to anime studies for a minute. Back in 2019, I was offered to review "The Anime Boom" (2017) by Michal Daliot-Bul and Nissim Otmazgin. On page xii, it reads: "The research for this book was generously funded by the Israel Science Foundation."

In college, I'd always walk past an unremarkable store in Beijing that sold a variety of trendy, but tacky, toys. That store has turned into Pop Mart, the $45-billion Chinese toy empire behind Labubu, the biggest global fad of 2025.

This is my big story/pilgrimage trip to explain how they got here

I spend a lot of time talking about all the things historical games do wrong when representing (or, mostly, not representing) women in the past - for a change, here I wrote about some games which I think do something better and more interesting in their depictions of historical women & girls!

#TWC32 is our special issue on Fandom and Politics, coedited by Ashley Hinck and Amber Davisson. They emphasize that "this special issue persuasively demonstrate[s] that the intersection of fandom and politics is not an unusual exception". Read the full issue here:
