The Under Night retrospective ends with me talking about how the game succeeded because it was made with a small team on a small budget while other giant games failed because it was impossible to meet expectations. I wrote that a month ago and it sucks it just became way more relevant.

Riot Games will downsize the development team for free-to-play fighting game 2XKO after player engagement failed to reach the level needed to continue supporting a team of its size, the company said. Going forward, development will continue with a smaller team, focusing on “key improvements to the game, including some of the things we’ve already heard you asking for.” Impacted staff will either be offered other opportunities within Riot Games, or let go with at least six months severance.

The point of the AI project is to provoke despair in creative people. They haven’t produced profits or anything anyone wants, just a steady stream of articles about how us artistic types can’t do the thing we’re already doing, making art. Jokes on them, we’re even better at despair than they are.
