I had a chat about the Epstein Files with the podcasters at The Guardian this morning. Kash Patel, Larry Summers and the NYT got some 'splainin to do.

Also, Jack Schlossberg, who is gonna get smoked by Micah Lasher like a sausage in the House race to replace Nadler. open.spotify.com/episode/0jYe...

We are at that time of year when journalists write holiday stories: evergreen pieces that could theoretically run whenever an editor wanted. These stories are often ridiculous and glorious. I flex my writer muscles on them.

Free shot. Pitch the Guardian a story you wouldn't expect me to swing on.

As we contemplate the end of the shutdown, consider class issues here. Yesterday, I wrote that Democrats had been holding the line on the shutdown because they calculated that damage done to poor people on SNAP was acceptable to support working class people on the exchanges.

Trump changed the math.

This is some of the finest feature reporting I've ever seen. It's a poetic piece befitting the subject and a robust argument to kill public subsidies for a sport that kills horses and exploits workers.

Pulitzer material from my friend @noahshachtman.bsky.social.

Democrats effectively decided that the damage the shutdown does to the poor is worth it to defend the interests of the working class.

This isn't quite a criticism, just an observation. Working class Americans turn out to vote more predictably than the poor do. The shutdown is raw class politics.

WalMart's website allows third-party sales without a lot of vetting. Here's an example of how that is starting to work in practice: this racist T-shirt is on sale. Instructions to report it following.

Sandwich Guy was acquitted.

Juries are the last line of defense for democracy. The Constitution provides an absolute right to a jury trial, and if the crimes of the state are egregious enough, a jury will not convict those who stand against that state.

It is increasingly apparent to me that officials in the Trump Administration are operating under the presumption that they will be given a blanket pardon at the end of his term for any federal crime they commit while he is in office. So they ignore FOIA and record laws and whatever else they can.

Decision Desk has called the Georgia PSC race for the Democratic candidates. The polls have been closed for 45 minutes. That's a drubbing.
November 5, 2025 at 12:47 AM
Democrats appear to have some advantages going into tonight's vote in Georgia on the PSC race, but only if presumptions about Black voters remain true. I remain dumbfounded that Donald Trump just about doubled his share of the Black vote in 2024, with the best Republican result in about 80 years.

The conversation about illegal immigration would be very different in America if the focus of federal law enforcement was on arresting and prosecuting corporate employers who hire undocumented workers.

Colton Moore is an ass. He was also legally correct, I think, in asserting his right to attend the session. He might have even had a case against Keith Williams.

He is being represented by Catherine Bernard, an asshole legal troll, which probably dooms him. People who can deny her a win usually do.

Cuomo is auditioning for the role formerly played by Rudy Giuliani in American politics.

New York City has lower violent crime rates than any major city in the United States and most suburbs as well. New Yorkers understand why. Only someone who doesn't understand New York would run this ad.

Good column by Bill Torpy in the AJC today.

If there's some question about whether or not the administration's view of America looks like 1933 Germany, this answers it. The imagery in these pictures is something out of a white supremacist advertising campaign.

The Labor Department's ad campaign, with numerous posters reminiscent of Russian propaganda, is part of a deliberate anti-DEI campaign being waged by the Trump administration.
