Reforms to the carceral system are supposedly going to make life easier for incarcerated people but in California, it hasn't really changed much. Parole boards make you demonstrate that you've genuinely changed for good as a person in order to re-enter society. But sometimes that isn't enough.
Many California prisoners get a second chance. A declining parole rate shows that's no guarantee
Many California prisoners can get a chance at release through expanded parole opportunities. But gaining release requires someone to demonstrate personal growth and accountability before the state Parole Board.

32 people died in ICE custody in 2025. And now we're into 2026 and at least 6 people have now died. But why?

It's because ICE has stopped allowing medical treatment for people who have been detained. Shameful.

Of the first things that immigrant advocates have said is "Do not open the door unless they have a warrant", and now that is no longer an option. ICE is now allowed to enter your home based on an administrative warrant that gives them the authority to arrest someone with a final order of removal.

Justine Paul spent 7 years incarcerated, for a crime he didn't commit, before the case was finally dropped in 2022. That's right, 7 years. And he never got a trial. This is why speedy trials are so necessary, to prevent cases like Justine's from happening.
