Sleeping In The Forest

I thought the earth remembered me, she
took me back so tenderly, arranging
her dark skirts, her pockets
full of lichens and seeds. I slept
as never before, a stone
on the riverbed, nothing
between me and the white fire of the stars

Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away;
Lengthen night and shorten day;
Every leaf speaks bliss to me,
Fluttering from the autumn tree.
I shall smile when wreaths of snow
Blossom where the rose should grow;
I shall sing when night’s decay
Ushers in a drearier day.

~ Emily Brontë

Did you know?

In the Victorian era, London’s overcrowded graveyards sometimes erupted.

Coffins were crammed so tightly into shallow churchyards that the gases of decomposition built up beneath the soil. The ground would swell and burst open to reveal decomposing corpses.

No sooner had he approached the woods than all those great trees & brambles & thorns opened on their own accord & allowed him to pass through. Then he began walking towards the castle (Perrault, Sleeping Beauty) #FairyTaleTuesday

#AUTUMN BEAUTY I was struck by the unsettlingly dark beauty of the #Bronte family home & churchyard when I visited Haworth. Shrouded in mist among the #autumn leaves it was clear no coward soul could live here. Glorious in its gothic gloom.
