The small river that runs through our village has started running, which is the official/unofficial sign of REAL spring. Me and the kids go for nature walks on the good weather days and chat about plants and animals. Today the kids found some beautiful honeycomb ice. #arctic #alaska #inupiaq

When the snowbirds come around it reminds me to clean out my ‘sigluaq’ aka my freezers. Get ready for this years abundance. A clean freezer invites good luck . I like to think of it as a reminder to also clean out my soul a little, and clean out the things we don’t want to carry from the last year.

Weird things you won’t usually find in the rural villages of Alaska: perfume. If it can’t be mailed then it will be rare. Most people don’t wear or enjoy others wearing perfume.

As a lifetime arctic resident I can tell you this: it’s not getting cold that is nessesarilly bad, it is getting cold FAST from a much higher temperature that usually ends in things going badly.

The Winter Holidays in the village are never just a one day thing. There is a feast day and a dancing day and gift giving and games and they can last a week or two. This painting is inspired by the dancing. And the joy and celebration in those days.
