“You have to do what you need to do.” Nicole’s accelerated program puts her on track to graduate with her bachelor’s in February '26. This is on top of single motherhood and working overnight. Nana Grants eliminates child care as a barrier to success for low-income student mothers like Nicole.

Nicole faced a challenge familiar to many low-income single mothers: Child care is not only unaffordable, but many subsidized programs don't cover a full workday. With Nana Grants, Nicole was able to work and complete her associate’s. Now, she’s working on her bachelor’s with our continued support.

From the Economic Policy Institute: "According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), child care is affordable if it costs no more than 7% of a family’s income. By this standard, only 21.20% of Georgia families can afford infant care."

According to the EPI, "a minimum wage worker in Georgia would need to work full time for 41 weeks, or from January to October, just to pay for child care for one infant."

After graduation, over 83% of parents reported that they are working in their field of study. Nana Grants helps student mothers transition from low-wage jobs to lifelong careers in IT, healthcare, criminal justice and other lucrative fields.

Since March of 2020, the Atlanta Community Food Bank experienced a 300% surge in requests for food assistance. Inflation, lack of affordable housing, and chronically low wages have worsened food insecurity for low-income single mothers in Georgia.

$37 billion worth of federal-provincial childcare funding agreements have been extended through 2031 — everywhere except Alberta & Saskatchewan.

After graduation, the number of parents who responded with "Strongly Agree" to the statement "I am financially self-sufficient" rose from 0% to over 62%. While financial self-sufficiency can be subjective most of Nana Grants’ graduates say they feel secure in their ability to cover family expenses.

After graduation, the percentage of parents who responded that they received WIC assistance decreased nearly 24% from 29.17% to 5.26%. WIC safeguards the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 by providing supplemental foods, nutrition education, and healthcare referrals.

According to the AJC, "More than a quarter of metro (Atlanta) renters (are) 'severely cost-burdened' making monthly rent payments."

Not only do we believe child care should be affordable for single parents working and going to school; the so-called "cost of living" should, in fact, be liveable.
