Today's #senryu (or #haiku?) simply describes my mundane life . . . probably because I have spent a productive day on syllabi and course websites, both unpoetic activities, but satisfying to sort out.

What a lucky day! First I find Chögyam Trungpa's "Born in Tibet" (1966) on the sidewalk to take away (people do that here), then the mail brings me BeeLyn Naihiwet's new book of poetry "Moonful" (2024). I'm already struck by its motto.

I had made up my mind
Every cruel thing would find me
a mirror
When a wisp of poetry
distracted my senses
And I stepped into sweet reflection, eyelashes drawn
like curtains
If I had a dollar for every time
I was caught
off guard

#7syllablesentence

This sounded so good i suspected i was remembering, not creating.
Yes....
It's an alternate translation of this poem by Machado, and maybe also a proverb.

Traveler, your footprints are the only road, nothing else. Traveler, there is no road; you make your own path as you walk. As you walk, you make your own road, and when you look back you see the path ...

obsessed with this painting by Hélène Delmaire, which inspired this ekphrastic poem from We Contain Landscapes. it’s a sonnet that breaks off, with fewer syllables at the last line, bc the speaker is crying. how to surrender to grief while refusing to be subsumed by it? WCL is forthcoming in March 🌀
