Only speaking personally, but today’s execution isn’t scaring me from protecting our neighbors, as some suggest is ICE’s goal. Nor am I angry with incandescent rage, in that I know such rage is unhelpful. Rather, I feel like it has forced me to truly accept that the same fate might befall me.

The persistence of the belief that Rs are good on economy, a proposition which has been observably false for the lifetime of most Americans, is the kind of thing that demands entire new fields, like we are pre-Newtonian in understanding how people construct their social reality.
I think these trust numbers, which are similar to what I've seen in other polling - private and public - are a good reminder that party brands are built over a long period of time and absolutely can change in the face of events, but it's a slow process. R+6 on trade is particularly bonkers.

god willing
I’m pretty sure that 2026 is going to be a bloodbath for the GOP, though, and to illustrate how bad of an idea predictions are, a bloodbath opens up the possibility that President Hakeem Jeffries is running as an incumbent in 2028.

The early books promise that any character backed into an impossible corner will simply die. This promise cannot be kept.
I sort of feel sorry for Martin, who talked a huge game about fantasy and other people’s world-building, but who has embarked on what is visibly a project too ambitious for anyone to actually ever finish.

George R.R. Martin has said that if he never completes Game of Thrones sequel Winds of Winter (or the book after that), there's no plan for anyone else to step in. Instead, his Song of Ice and Fire series simply "won't be finished."

I put the phone aside to spend time with a friend. A few hours pass. I pick the phone up. Will there be a murder, I wonder. Will there be a war.

I used to think that the height of political sophistication was a nuanced grasp of policy. I no longer feel this way.

Other papers have modeled this more and concluded that without non-selfish high performers, you basically always converge towards mutual mediocrity -- low performers dominating while allowing one another to suck shit, while targeting high performers.

When we win, and we will, we will hail such names as “Dr. Fuckley” and “Reverend Arson” as past generations hailed Publius
I think it's now possible to make a poli-sci course that equips one for modern political analysis better than most classic theory and has a syllabus sourced entirely from random internet posts.

Beyond that, most people want efficient *user experience*, ie no lines at the DMV. Efficient in the minimal expenditure sense is precisely the opposite

Why would anyone attend an expensive college that would retroactively take away your degree, after you were long gone, to satisfy the whim of a powerful person
