Myelin sheaths in the central nervous system can withstand damage and dynamically remodel
Myelin damage is a hallmark of several neurological disorders, but how it occurs remains to be fully understood. In this study, we found that early damage in zebrafish and rodent demyelination models ...

If you're interested in the factors that enable the regular structure of CNS #myelin sheaths by #oligodendrocytes, check this out. Featuring a #CDC42 - effector proteins - #septin axis. Congrats to 1st author Sophie, and a big thank you to all who contributed

CDC42‐Effector Proteins Regulate Higher Order Structure of Septins Required for CNS Myelin Integrity
CDC42-effector proteins 1/2 are present in CNS myelin. They facilitate the higher order structure of myelin septin filaments. Their loss impairs septin-dependent scaffolding of myelin. Myelin o...

This nice paper adds cows to the list of species using tools
Our new paper (with @biotay.bsky.social) is out and on the cover story of @currentbiology.bsky.social !!!! Veronika, a Carinthian mountain cow flexibly uses a “multi-purpose tool” to scratch herself. A video and more information will follow in the comments.

Long overdue…. My congratulations!
Happy to tell that I got my tenured professorship at the University Medical Center in Göttingen 🇩🇪!
Grateful for my students, mentors, international collaborators, the @nanotag.bsky.social team, and my family (dog included 🐾). Motivated to keep pushing science, innovation, startups, and education 🌍✨

Adaptor protein complex 2 (AP2) participates in biogenesis and homeostasis of myelin sheaths in the central nervous system
Myelination of CNS axons requires oligodendrocytes to undergo extensive morphological changes by producing large amounts of myelin membrane with defined protein composition and structure. The formatio...

During the symposium @amsterdamleuko.bsky.social, I learned that lifespan and quality of life have improved because caregivers now know better how to support #leukodystrophy patients. If that’s not a cause worth spending a scientific career on, I don’t know what is. Congratulations, Marjo!
Yesterday in Amsterdam, Marjo van der Knaap gave her retirement lecture at @vuamsterdam.bsky.social. An international group of scientists working on #leukodystrophies paid respect to her achievements, including by wearing the traditional gown. There was also a good party @amsterdamleuko.bsky.social

Leukodystrophies are rare, severe brain disorders. It’s remarkable how much the field has progressed, from identifying disease genes and understanding some of the disease mechanisms to therapy, quite a bit of that owing to Marjos work @amsterdamleuko.bsky.social

It’s years since I did #leukodystrophy research, so I’m looking forward to the updates I'll get in the next 2 days symposium @amsterdamleuko.bsky.social. We‘ll also celebrate the achievements of Marjo van der Knaap, who will retire soon.

Leaving Edinburgh and the peripheral nerve society meeting with lots of impressions of how much the science in this field has advanced in the last few years, and how basic science ultimately results in therapy approaches for neuropathies. Takes years but is very much worth it.

This interesting paper establishes zebrafish as a model to assess diameters of myelinated axons and their relevance for the speed of nerve conduction. Great work from Dave Lyons and his team in Edinburgh
