Preach!
Makes me so angry to see UK's newer universities attacked - institutions laden with awards, doing all the regional economic work, engagement and world-leading research they were asked to and more. Would be seen as unimaginable successes in the 1980s. At root it's just snobbery and prejudice.

Firstly, this is a really great thread on history, and a period that many Brits live to talk about in very general terms. I learnt a lot! Thanks @lvhicks.bsky.social. Secondly, the lesson inherent also seems so very applicable to politics today. #historyedu #politicsedu
For the anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, 1066, here is thread on why 'who was the rightful king?' is the wrong question to ask, why we don't know the complete story and why that makes things more interesting. 1/ #medievalsky #skystorians #historyedu #historyteachers

I think we need to say it louder for people in the back of the room, some of them clearly haven’t been paying attention!!
Not sure why I need to continue repeating this. Rule of law? Dead. Rights? Gone. Executive power? Entirely unchecked by Congress, subject to a judiciary with a corrupt top court. State sanctioned kidnappings and renditions. What democracy?
American democracy no longer exists.

Bear in mind that this (perhaps partial) intelligence cut off occurs AFTER Zelensky issued a de facto apology to Trump, which Trump publicly accepted. If Trump wanted Ukraine to lose and Russia to win, it would be hard to see how his actions would be much different right now.

Well, not that I’m encouraging anything other than full engagement for this vote… I do love to see these media bubbles burst.
The right-wing Daily Express asks its readers to vote on whether Nigel Farage should be the US ambassador.
My left-of-centre friends, take the poll and upset their desired outcome.

As a director of a centre called CMDCI, I endorse this message.
Pro-tip for academics:
Creating a Backronym to a common word for your research project or team may sound fun, but it pretty much guarantees no one can ever search for you by it.
Do think about that. Sometimes a semi-random set of letters is better.

This one will have some fighting comments, but he isn’t wrong!
I have to speak my truth though howls of outrage batter me like a hurricane:
The Muppet Christmas Carol is just okay.
If you love it, great! I want you to love it! I celebrate your love of it. Enjoy.
But it's, you know... fine. Not the worst Christmas Carol, not the best. Just adequately felty.

I always warn first year students ‘if you study social science then you will never look at the world the same way again’ and usually move onto ‘I did warn you’ two or three years later…
Was asked why so many social scientists are left wing. Could it be this? If you look at the world of inequality and poverty and think ‘we need to understand this and do better’ you might become a social scientist. But if you think ‘this is basically all ok’, you won’t.

Been there, done that!
In your 20s, you wake up with your friends sleeping on your floor because they passed out there. In your 40s, you wake up with your friend in the floor because she threw her back out and that’s the only place she has slept for two weeks. Life comes at you quickly.

To my US colleagues and friends, have a great Thanksgiving. As holidays go, it has always been one of my favourites, with the emphasis on family, friends, and general togetherness! Probably not so popular with the non-turkey lovers though…

I was speaking with individual business/corporate folks last week about the USA election results and what comes next. I was slightly surprised by how many that seemed to think it would be ‘same, same’ after January 2025. No
It will not be business as usual, either in the US, or dealing with the US.

Did you know? Earlier this year, Minnesota became the latest state to eliminate prison gerrymandering.
A new law, signed by Tim Walz in the spring, will end the practice of counting incarcerated people where prisons are located, which skews political power within the state.
