European Engineer - may not play nicely with people who hate clean energy progress.

Well tomorrow I’m doing the impossible, driving from Yorkshire to Spain in an EV with only 200 miles of range. I’m getting quite good at the impossible, this will be my third time 😂. (1400 miles each way).

I have to admit, despite being a grid engineer 20 years ago, I didn’t expect to be sat at home, charging 2 EVs, running a heat pump to heat water, charging my home batteries and doing washing, all for free and all to help stabilise the grid. 17kW pulling now, not bad on an 80Amp domestic supply.

My EV is in for a service, the dealership gave me a plug in hybrid loan car… It’s almost brand new, and already ruined. The battery (20kWh) was entirely empty and had never been charged, it took 20 minutes of 7.5kW charging before the gauge moved from 0%, so the buffer was empty too.

100, 120, 135, 150, 165.

Nothing special, just the quiet progress of the maximum charging speed of the humble little Volkswagen ID.3 60kWh battery pack since its launch the end of 2020.
5 years, a lot of progress.

20 years ago I was hoping to be alive long enough to see Nuclear Fusion industrialised.

Now I find my self just wanting to be alive long enough for all the anti-progress bullshit around wind / solar / batteries / EVs to have gone away.

Some time over the last few weeks the UK offshore wind farm Dogger Bank A seems to have sprung into life. When fully operational that will be another 1.2GW of wind available against the UKs roughly 45GW max demand.

A new solar record was achieved 8th July, which is a mild surprise as it was a very hot day.

Whilst the drivel and anti EV sentiment continues to pour out in the UK, quietly 25% of all cars sold in June were EV, and another 15% were plug in hybrid. Whilst I think PHEV aren’t necessary, they are a gateway to full BEV.

UK June 2025 Car registration figures are in. Overall YOY growth is 6.7%.
Pure BEV is 24.8% of the market, up 39.1% YOY, PHEV is also 11.2%, up 28.8% YOY.

So that’s 40% of the cars sold in June have a plug…

Green line renewalables, Orange line gas, black line wholesale price. Anyone notice a pattern?

Just three news stories today from the UK, where tosspot right wingers are either breaking the law, worrying about flags or giving money back to world ruining billionaires. Right wing cockwombles don’t care about you or the planet, just making themselves richer, stop voting for them.

EV Adoption - The press love to tell you it’s stalled, so you point to actual numbers. So they follow up with “yeah, but only growth in China”.
One thing China HAD that we DIDNT in Europe was reasonably priced EVs, but now we do have some, and most of those have waiting lists to buy them.

Trump supporting candidate soundly beaten in the Presidential elections in Romania, against all expectations! Centrist President elected instead of far right.

I was bored with Americans telling me I pay 50% income tax for healthcare in the UK, so I did some digging.

USA Fed Govt pays $4,500 per head for healthcare, for that most Americans get almost nothing (£3500)
The UK government pays £2800 per head for the NHS, and for that we get almost everything.

@jakerichardsmp.bsky.social so Jake, did you actually ask people about freedom of movement or did you just make it up. Please post your statistics here and who carried out the survey.

Well I was upset with myself earlier this week as I felt “caught out” by the national power cut here in Spain. I was a grid engineer in the UK and really thought it would take them a few days to bring the power back. We are in Spain for 3 months, and just finishing our stay before heading home

News report from Spain, where I’m living this month. A brief interruption in power slightly increased the number of people on the beach and the demand for cash. But since 11pm last night all back to normal
