=== Saint Augustine and Guy Guers, Saint Anthony, Two Bearers of Offerings, Saint Jerome, Christ and the Twelve Apostles === With its inner wings open, the Altarpiece allowed pilgrims and the afflicted to venerate Saint Anthony, protector and healer of Saint Anthony’s fire. Saint Anthony occupies the place of honour at the centre of the corpus and at his side a pig is depicted, the emblem of the Antonite order. On his left and right, two bearers of offerings illustrate these contributions in kind, an important source of income for the Antonites. This central section is framed by Saint Augustine and Saint Jerome, two of the four great fathers of the Latin Church. Guy Guyers, who had commissioned the Altarpiece, is depicted kneeling at the feet of Saint Augustine. === Visit of Saint Anthony to Saint Paul the Hermit === The two hermits meet in a stunning landscape, intended to represent the Theban Desert. Grünewald created a fantastic universe, surrounding the date palm with a strange mixture of vegetation, in marked contrast with the calmness and tranquillity of the encounter, in which the animals in attendance take part, with the crow bringing two morsels of bread to the two recluses. In this dreamlike scene, medicinal plants, painted in naturalistic fashion, sprout at the feet of the two main figures. === Saint Anthony Tormented by Demons === This panel depicts Saint Anthony being tormented by monstrous creatures sent by Satan. Trampled to the ground, beaten with sticks, torn by claws and bitten, Saint Anthony appeals to God for help who sends angels to combat these evil demons. In the lower left corner, the being with webbed feet and a distended belly seems to personify the disease caused by ergot poisoning, resulting in swelling and ulcerous growths. In 2019 I incidentally discovered (https://snrk.de/page_face-it/) a hidden monstrous head (a devil?) in the painting "The Temptation of St. Anthony" (c. 1512-1516) by Matthias Grünewald (Mathis Gothardt Neithardt). The painting is in a panel of the Isenheim Altarpiece, now located at the Musée Unterlinden, Colmar, France. Later I found out that I was not the first one who spotted that head (https://snrk.de/how-gustave-dore-might-have-played-with-pareidolia/#head). Gustave Doré was faster (1863). When Henry Holiday illustrated Lewis Carroll's "The Hunting of the Snark" (1876), his playing with the pareidolia of the beholders of his illustrations allows him to hold them responsible for the things (especially the long ones) which they "see".

(https://snrk.de/page_this-is-no-cigar) Detail from Henry Holiday's illustration to the last fit (chapter) of Lewis Carroll's "The Hunting of the Snark" showing a simulacrum about which, as far as I know, until now no AI based image content checker complained. And here I mean the simulacrum on the lower left side of the illustration and not the "torso-like simulacrum" (see https://snrk.de/page_this-is-no-cigar/#Tufail) on the lower right side. Holiday's dark illustration (https://snrk.de/snarkhunt/#561) to the 8th fit of Lewis Carroll's "The Hunting of the Snark" is quite challenging. He found a way to hold the beholders of his illustrations responsible for what they "see". Holiday migth have gotten some ideas from his teacher John Everett Millais (https://snrk.de/page_lorenzo-and-isabella/).

Dali, who strikes me as sort of a brilliant jerk, called bullshit and set out to create a painting of lower resolution that could be recognized. His painting, shown below, used only 121 pixels. I know that I am painting Lincoln, but all I see is Gala. But the reality is, I’m looking too closely at the work. I’ve got the canvas right up in front of my nose, and all I see is the micro view that makes up the macro view.It’s an easy trap to fall into. When you worry that your work isn’t accomplishing what you set out to do, take a step back (about 20 meters) and take another look. Sometimes you just get too close. [...]"
