A short story Photo by the author This story is one I submitted to one of NYC Midnight's writing contests. I don't remember the prompts, but they had to be something amusing to result in the following tale. The Cook in the Kitchen Betty Norman held the dusty cookbook angled toward the sunlight spilling through the thrift shop’s window. Her husband Eustace tromped up behind her, his arms filled with a dozen mildewed copies of Popular Mechanics magazines and five dull-brass cabinet knobs.

An NYC Midnight Short Story Photography by the author I don't remember the prompts for this one. I think the genre must have been Adventure or something like that. I do remember thinking this ended up a hot mess, and looking back at the feedback I received the judges agreed. It didn't advance, and it has languished in my files since February 2023.

The HHS rule banning trans care from many ACA plans is open for public comment now. Only 3 comments so far.

Embarrassing how the media is completely ignoring this. There's likely over 200,000 trans people on ACA plans (1% of 24 million)

Whatever they'll do to trans people, they'll do to you...BUT WHY DO YOU NEED TO BE DIRECTLY THREATENED IN ORDER TO CARE? A human being is a human being. The trans community is made up of human beings who have every right to the same respect and care that you want for yourself 1/?

There is a quote from @ericlarocca.bsky.social At Dark, I Become Loathsome, "... I've learned that human decency only exists when it's convenient." Nothing has hit me quite as hard since November as that line. I wish that didn't feel so fucking accurate right now.

Thank you @vantine.bsky.social & library journal for this great review!

"The book explores guilt as a kind of haunting and is a contemporary ghost story with great crossover potential...The book leaves readers wanting more stories about Olivia and her friends."
The author of one of my favorite books, White Horse, @erikatwurth.bsky.social has a new book with a great cast of supporting chararcters and an exciting twist on blending horror and mystery in The Haunting of Room 904 @flatironbooks.bsky.social
