This beauty is a Crested Goshawk. A medium sized raptor, originally a forest bird, but increasingly seen in urban areas. This one, in our garden in Johor, was drying in the sun after a heavy shower. Love the fierce red eye.

Another four residents of Hope Botanical Gardens, here in Kingston, Jamaica. A beautiful park, right on the edge of the urban area at the foot of forested hill slopes behind.
Northern Mockingbird. Pale below and grey in the back with white outlines on the wings. A perky expression and a longish tail. Standing on a green ground White-chinned Thrush. Pale grey below and darker grey wings and head. Bright orange bill and feet. Perched on a wire. Two Yellow-billed Amazons. Chatty parrots! All shades of green and a yellow bill. White eye rings and the upper one has a red throat. White-winged Dove. Perched on a wire. Grey belly, pale brown breast and back with a white leading edge to the wing and bright red feet.

Another happy moment, driving around the construction site here in Kingston. I thought I was hearing the tracks of an excavator squeaking, but then realised it was birds, very close to the car! Killdeer are largish plovers with an unusual two black bars across the breast.

An Olive-throated Parakeet. (Jamaican variety). One of a small flock noisily squawking on the phone lines beside the road. Very unconcerned about me walking up for a closer look.

Well! An unexpected job in Jamaica and a chance to see a whole new set of birds!! White-winged Dove, Greater Antillean Grackle, Brown Pelicans and a Turkey Vulture. All lifers.
Greater Antillean Grackle Quite a large black bird with a white eye, holding some fruits in its claw and pulling chunks off White winged Dove perched on a heavy branch. Brown head, grey belly, a white edge to its wing and a blue eye patch. About 150 Brown Pelicans mobbing a small fishing boat. A Turkey Vulture soaring in the warm breeze. A large bird with dark leading edges on its wings and white to the rear.

Three birds from last weekend at the Highlands of Fraser's Hill, Malaysia. Female Little Pied Flycatcher, Female Rusty Naped Pitta (Rare bird. Lifer for me!) Lesser Shortwing.

Hill Blue Flycatchers at Fraser's Hill. This pair was very cooperative for a while, perching, seemingly unafraid, very close to the roadside.
The male hill blue flycatcher has deep blue upper parts, and orange throat and breast and a white belly. Perched on a small brach in front of ferns. The female hill blue flycatcher is less dramatic than the male. Brown head and back, but the same orange throat and breast. Perched on the same small branch.

Hello again, Bsky! Been a while with lots else happening. Studying odonata as a new interest. Anyway ... female flowerpeckers are tricky to ID, but this lady made it easy by foraging with the male Orange-bellied Flowerpecker. They do love the clidemia and melastoma berries!

#birds #birdsofmalaysia This is a Malayan Laughingthrush. Previously viewed as a subspecies of Chestnut-crowned Laughingthrush, it was separated and is found only in the extreme south of Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia. This one has been ringed and I managed to get both sides to see the number.

Happy to see these Blue Sprite mating (pseudagrion microcephalum). The male is hard to differentiate from Lookalike Sprite (pseudagrion australasiae) but having the female together makes the identification clear.

The Asian brown flycatcher is a winter visitor here, as it breeds further north in China, Japan and Siberia. They are, as the name suggests, insectivorous and are very clever at catching their prey. This one has a large dragonfly and seems to be considering how to eat it!
