I’m very much looking forward to reading this. Curious as to what extent the ideas within can be applied to Curriculum for Wales.

Fascinating consultation here from the Welsh Government on extending the "enabling learning" section guidance of the curriculum beyond just the foundation phase (3-7 yo) all the way to 16 year olds.

The Foundation Phase (FP) was a flagship Welsh Government policy introduced in 2008.

NEWS - Welsh Government intend to require all teachers in Wales, Foundation Phase right through to secondary to use play & play-based learning.

If it's in the guidance, Estyn will inspect it. There's a consultation on it, closes Dec 20th. Tell WG what you think www.gov.wales/curriculum-w...

If I was on a mission to close the disadvantage gap, the one thing I certainly would not do is increase the amount & weighting of coursework/non-examined assessment.

If I was on a mission to solve recruitment & retention crisis, one thing I’d certainly not do is increase the amount CW/NEA.

Yet…🤯

Yes, absolutely this: the move to projects and coursework will lead to:
- more work for teachers
- less reliability
- advantaging the middle class
And most importantly, there is no future for essay-style assessment under AI.
I was interviewed by Jess Casey at The Irish Examiner to discuss what I considered was the major education issue of the election.
I spoke about Leaving Cert Redevelopment.

For anyone who followed me on X and has just started following me here, rest assured I’ll still be trying to make sense of Curriculum for Wales, as well as posting about how coursework/non-examined assessment is inherently unfair.

Ymlaen!

This all seems rather sensible.

I’m still intrigued that curriculum and assessment under the Labour Party in England could be dramatically different from that in Wales under Welsh Labour.

Perhaps it’s useful to see this gender gap as a learning gap. We can then ask ‘why is it that girls appear to learn more than boys?’

In addition to falling standards and significant disadvantage gap at every stage, we now have this to add to the bleak picture of education in Wales.

Even more worryingly, I’m far from convinced that new curriculum and assessment reform will make any of this better.

In case anyone is unaware of the worrying picture that is education in Wales right now, I wrote this short post a few months ago.

It ends with a suggestion as to how we can begin move forward, which I suspect has fallen on deaf ears.
