A great provocation from @daisychristo.bsky.social at the end of this! Standardised assessments for universities….

Read the blog before you say this is bonkers!

Why do we measure the impact of university based on graduate earnings?

Would you measure a hospital based on the later earnings of the people it treats?

Why not use assessment data to measure university impact instead?

We spend billions of private & public money on university education, justified by the fact that it teaches valuable skills.

But there's surprisingly little evidence this is true - partly because we have little reliable assessment data for most degrees.

Lots of overlap between this post and my @smfthinktank.bsky.social paper from 2021 on how policymakers should respond to the problem of signalling in education.

Specifically on the need for better measures of direct "learning gain" from university

Student loans & interest charges are high, but justified by the fact graduates earn more.

But does that justification work? People who buy Rolexes earn more than those who don't, but we don't encourage 18-year-olds to take out loans to buy one..

We've got some feedback on our AI feedback.

It's "uncannily accurate" - but maybe a bit too verbose and harsh! We're working on simplifying and softening it.

Imagine a world where English teachers get their marking done before the maths teachers...
That is what our pioneer schools are seeing!

Read a case study here.

English Literature has the worst marking reliability of any subject, & essays take a long time to mark.

Can our AI-enhanced Comparative Judgement model close the reliability & efficiency gap with maths?

You can believe that schools need a lot more and a lot less technology.

EG Handwriting recognition technology will make screen-free classrooms even more viable.

It’s only tangentially to do with schools but it’s another funny and insightful @daisychristo.bsky.social piece on mobile phones and shifting social norms. Someone should really give her a newspaper column….

Some thoughts on regulating social media.

In the past I've compared smartphones to cigarettes, which is unfair - they're obviously more useful than that.

Cars are a better analogy - a brilliant technology with horrible downsides.

First, a powerful argument from @daisychristo.bsky.social for ditching over-prescriptive rubrics which don't actually help you judge student work effectively. (Also a counter-intuitive finding that essays with more factual errors are often better!). substack.com/inbox/post/1...

Prescriptive writing rubrics are a really bad idea.

If a student has discretion in how to respond to a task, a marker has to have discretion too.

A very good read here.

As with everything in life, there is a correlation between number of attempts and number of failures, so the AI result isn’t surprising.

We need to think carefully about our marking rubrics so they don’t unintentionally discourage our students from making the attempts.
