“This is the most beautiful sight these eyes have ever seen”

~ Daniel Eugene Ruettiger, Sr (lol)

Having been in Miami to witness Notre Dame absolutely demolished by Alabama in 2013, this one was sweet.

Great season no matter what, but a Natty even being in the conversation after NIU is a gift.

I limit time on X, only occasionally checking in via a blank burner. It was morbidly fascinating to stumble onto a live voice chat last night where Elon (via his “Adrian Dittmann” alt) had dropped in and was furiously beefing with MAGA over the H1B thing and related account bans. Utter chaos.

Also it is slightly concerning to see how ChatGPT is obliterating use of sites like StackOverflow. Great short term wins, but long term, what are the LLMs training on? Training collapse seems like a real risk. Or is there a solution to this I’m not seeing?

Is the AI scaling wall real? As a moderate user, it does feel like the pace of advancement has slowed rather than accelerated. Tbh, a log curve and natural capital barrier seem like welcome brakes right now; I don’t think human civ is ready for ASI. But also generally, LLMs never felt sufficient.

I appreciate the lack of anime profile pictures with anonymous sophomoric tech/pol takes on Bsky as compared to X. Could be wrong though — maybe being a random backend engineer in SF really does basically make you L from Death Note.

Best use of blockchain is democratic elections and it’s crazy that we will never see this happen

Apparently there’s a chrome extension, Porto, that lets you port your tweets from X/Twitter to Bluesky. Will probably hit that and shut down my old X account. Not that there’s too much there, but it’s hard to let go.

Being a software eng on Twitter right now must be akin to the experience of medical professionals on Twitter from 2020-2021. Watching folks make sweeping assertions about technical domains that they have no experience with, and it’s bad on both sides.

Blockchain seems like the best and most needed technology for voting in elections. Publicly auditable and transparent. Individual privacy is probably the main challenge but that seems like a solvable sub problem.

Really couldn’t care less about twitter’s ownership, but it seems like it’d going to be a money pit. High cost, low upside, very tenuous hold on the market.. pretty easy for people to switch to another message board app on a whim.

Fall is the best season out there and it’s not even close.

What Zuck is driving right now is a big deal. AR/VR will be the defining technological jump of our lifetime, period. There are going to be winners and losers along the way, but it’s inspiring to see Meta leaning in hard.

Why is DeJoy still postmaster general
November 16, 2024 at 1:21 PM
The USPS lost over 200 of our formal wedding invitations, each including extra postage inside for the return (over $300 in total). We regularly receive the wrong mail and, don’t receive mail that we’re expecting, busy my trust is officially shattered after this one.

Moving? Thinking of paying a big deposit for professionals because it’ll be easy? Avoid @americanvanline (AVL) — absolute horror show. 2 missed deadlines, large errors, a hostile customer agent, and us stuck in a really bad situation now trying to find an alternative. Stay away.

Character-limited platforms take extra thought to convey an idea. I wonder how much their prevalence may be changing language and discourse, cascading into culture at large.

Maybe I’m just an old geezer, but the #NFT bubble makes zero sense to me. Hope the bubble is localized and not representative of crypto at large.

That near-all consumer goods are shipped in custom single-use plastics is insane. Standardized containers with brand inserts could be built and recycled by the private sector and subsidized by gov’t. Otherwise we’re subsidizing with hidden long term environmental cost.

Always-on IM is terrible for productivity. There are benefits, but the trade-offs are just not worth it... for folk like me at least.
