Anyone else struggle to get students to include the correct units in area and volume problems in #math #maths? I started including the units in working and it seems to have really helped - particularly with the powers #mathschat

In #MathsToday we looked at impossible objects. What I particularly liked was the opportunity to develop the skill of drawing angles when creating the equilateral triangle as a starting point - using protractors. Great progress by this student 😃 #MathArt #MathsChat #Ilovemaths

I made a couple of new revision resources (one for GCSE, two for A level) that maths teachers might find useful. Quick blog post about them here:

Every time I teach fractions to Y7 there are students who already feel they have mastered it. So it was great in #Mathstoday when exploring the relationship between the numerator and denominator, to see that this was new to the whole class as a way to spot equivalent fractions. #MathsChat #Mathtoday

In #Mathstoday we carried on our Mathematical Art journey looking at Islamic geometry and patterns. Again the resources at www.artfulmaths.com/mathematical... were my starting point. What I like about these are that they are really accessible for all. #Mathschat #Mathart

In #MathsToday we continued having fun with Mathematical Art creating “curves of pursuit.” Once again using ideas from www.artfulmaths.com/mathematical... #MathArt #MathsChat

In #MathsToday (well yesterday) we celebrated Pi Day at school. I know there are mixed views on this, but for me it is a wonderful opportunity to look at some historical aspects of Mathematics and some subject specific terminology like “irrational” - that we might not otherwise mention.

Last year my Y8s needed a lot of help turning these hopping questions into an nth term, so I’d prepared a lot of scaffolding for #MathsToday. This year I have a stronger class generally, and they saw the connection right away! So we did some working backwards from other starting points.

Week 2 of 8 running my Mathematical Art elective using some of the wonderful resources by Clarissa Grandi on www.artfulmaths.com Today we looked at cardioids #Mathstoday

In #MathsToday we explored different ways to find missing angles. Students loved seeing methods named after them - and it was a great way to see how all those angle rules link into each other.

So many fabulous resources out there so I rarely have to make things but, unable to quite find what I wanted, in #MathsToday I put together this worksheet to review expanding and factorising with Year 8.

One “different” thing I did in #Mathstoday was, under the visualiser, make a mistake drawing an angle then give the students 30 seconds to discuss what it was in pairs. Went for the classics - not lining it up right and using the wrong scale. Preferred the live modelling to a printed example.

In #Mathstoday we are expanding binomials. Just using the visualiser and whiteboards (for students). Great way to use variation and get them thinking - and to spot common misconceptions.

In #MathsToday we were multiplying and dividing by powers of 10 - using plastic wallets to write the numbers on so we could move the digits up and down on the place value grid.

Today in Maths we revisited defining angles. Decided to link it to fractions of the circle which really helped when they moved onto estimating angles #Mathstoday

I am running a Mathematical Art elective using some of the wonderful resources by Clarissa Grandi on www.artfulmaths.com This is Week 1 looking at insect symmetry. Will post each week - trying to gradually increase difficulty so this is a great one to start with #mathschat

Really enjoyed revisiting ratio tables with @studymaths.bsky.social at #ttrconnectmaths in Manchester today. Despite using them for years, had never really thought about the cross products in a rectangle within the table being equal. Thanks so much Jonathan and the team @ttradioofficial.bsky.social
