Robert “Ed” Smylie, the NASA official who saved the Apollo 13 crew in 1970, has died at 95. He cobbled together an apparatus made of cardboard, plastic bags and duct tape after an explosion crippled the spacecraft as it sped toward the moon.

Chemist Reatha Clark King was born #OTD in 1938.

Her calorimetry work on gaseous fluorine compounds at the National Bureau of Standards contributed to NASA's investigations of various rocket fuels for the space program. She was the first Black woman to work as a chemist at NIST. 🧪 👩🏾‍🔬

I noted the plaintiff in the case against the military transgender ban that just resulted in a nationwide injunction against it, out of WA state, is Commander Emily Shilling, a Navy fighter and test pilot who transitioned while in the service.
