Study in @natcomms.nature.com shows how #ammonia-oxidizing #archaea thrive in nutrient-poor waters: Urea is a major energy source for #AOA in the open #ocean, while coastal AOA prefer #ammonium.

New preprint!
We explore how gutless marine worms and their bacterial symbionts use organosulfur compounds like DMSP and DMS - key molecules in marine sulfur cycling.
Our results show that these compounds support carbon and energy metabolism in the Olavius algarvensis symbiosis.

On this day in 1859 English naturalist Charles #Darwin publishes "On the Origin of Species," radically changing the view of #evolution and laying the foundation for evolutionary biology. #otd

The page (picture 2) was in the first of four notebooks he had created in London on the question of species change. However, he did not explain what he was thinking in words, but in a fist-sized diagram: a line shoots out from an origin marked with the number ‘1’ and then forks several times.
