New piece: I wrote about Netflix’s LONG STORY SHORT. It’s a funny and enjoyable series that also grapples with what it means to be Jewish, which makes it important given how the Trump administration is co-opting Jewishness in perverse ways.

Netflix's new comedy is a powerful exploration of what it means to be Jewish. Someone should tell the Trump administration.

This weekend in “I contain cinematic multitudes” (sorry Netflix you should’ve released FRANKENSTEIN in theaters like a real movie studio):
November 7, 2025 at 11:57 PM
Rhea Seehorn’s performance in BETTER CALL SAUL was remarkable in part for how restrained it was, so it’s fascinating that in #Pluribus she’s playing someone who’s literally the most emotionally volatile person in the entire world.

Evening bump: I wrote about BUGONIA.

It’s one of Yorgos Lanthimos’ lesser movies, which means it’s merely Quite Good.

Bugonia review: Alien vs. Redditor - MovieManifesto
Yorgos Lanthimos' new whatsit lacks the power or beauty of his best work, but it's entertaining, with some sobering thoughts on America.

“Where BUGONIA does endure is its portrait of contemporary America... Even if its themes and its plot clash rather than harmonize, it is *watchable*, with two memorable characters whose respective neuroses are individuated rather than purely symbolic.”

New piece: I wrote about BUGONIA. It isn’t as majestic as Yorgos Lanthimos’ best movies, but it’s damn entertaining, with strong performances from Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, and it accurately reflects just how fucked up this country is.

“My endorsement means a lot to me” is such a spectacular tautology. Forget “many people are saying,” we’ve moved on to “I’m very important in my opinion.”
Trump: "My endorsement means a lot to me, so I was a little disappointed in the fact that New Jersey -- I thought New Jersey would do a little bit better than that."

“This doesn’t mean that he disappears into the role, obliterating the distinction between actor & character. Quite the opposite: Hawke flaunts his gifts with a conspicuous élan, and it’s this showboating quality that makes his performance so inhabiting.”

“White’s vocals are impressive, but otherwise, he isn’t extending himself; it’s hard not to watch him and think, ‘What if the dude from THE BEAR could sing?’ It’s a solid, sturdy performance whose lack of bravado works both for & against it.”

New piece: I wrote about the lead performances in two recent biopics, Jeremy Allen White in SPRINGSTEEN: DELIVER ME FROM NOWHERE and Ethan Hawke in BLUE MOON. I didn’t fake an accent, but maybe I’ll still land an Oscar nomination?

“You can’t just sit there and do nothing.”
“I’m not doing nothing, I’m sending my best agents. And you.”

This wasn’t my favorite season of #SlowHorses, but I will always savor Gary Oldman shitting on Jack Lowden.

Finished S2 of #NobodyWantsThis, and if you’re interested in a smart and funny Netflix comedy that also wrestles sincerely with what it means to be Jewish in modern America, might I recommend LONG STORY SHORT?

Evening bump: I wrote about Luca Guadagnino’s AFTER THE HUNT.

Not a good movie, but at least it’s a serious one.

“These questions are likely to fascinate only a small percentage of the moviegoing audience: sociologists, intersectionality majors, New York Times opinion columnists.”

I think #NobodyWantsThis is a very pleasant show with a bunch of charming actors, but its basketball scenes drive me completely insane.

New piece: I wrote about Luca Guadagnino’s AFTER THE HUNT, a movie that’s impressively made, competently acted, and largely devoid of anything interesting to say about #MeToo, “cancel culture,” or any element of modern campus life.

I don’t know if A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE is any good, but I *do* know that Kathryn Bigelow has made a bunch of whiz-bang classics yet I can only watch her newest movie on my television set, and I frankly think that sucks.

You do, in fact, gotta hand it to #TheMorningShow for its very funny illustration of how A.I. is an impending disaster.
October 22, 2025 at 4:53 PM
ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER is a 145-minute genre-hopping Pynchon adaptation which has made $62M domestic and another $101M internationally (thus far), so naturally outlets are leaping at the chance to brand it a flop.
October 21, 2025 at 8:32 PM
Netflix released an entire season of #TheDiplomat last Thursday, and four days later outlets were releasing pieces with headlines like “We need to talk about what happened on THE DIPLOMAT finale,” and I just don’t think this is a healthy TV ecosystem for either viewers or critics.
