New piece: I wrote about Netflix’s LONG STORY SHORT. It’s a funny and enjoyable series that also grapples with what it means to be Jewish, which makes it important given how the Trump administration is co-opting Jewishness in perverse ways.

In “Long Story Short,” Jews Will Not Be Replaced - MovieManifesto
Netflix's new comedy is a powerful exploration of what it means to be Jewish. Someone should tell the Trump administration.

“There is nothing truly new on screen—just a careful rendering of a beloved piece of intellectual property. The movie never finds its courage, instead dutifully following a Yellow Brick Road that winds up being a dead end.”

Wicked: For Good review: Make Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored - MovieManifesto
Jon M. Chu's sequel to Wicked is a deflating mess, with flat songs, a dull story, and zero sense of creative inspiration.

New piece: As someone who quite liked the first WICKED, I had high hopes for the sequel. But WICKED: FOR GOOD is a debacle, with flat choreography, a dull story, and no spark of life.

“Not only does it fail to leverage the skills of its leading man, but it also struggles to work as a piece of blockbuster filmmaking. For a movie ostensibly focused on speed and excitement, it is oddly sluggish and sullen.”

New piece: I love Edgar Wright, I really like Glen Powell, and I kind of have a crush on Katy O’Brian. So I’m bummed to report that THE RUNNING MAN is kind of a drag.

The finale of #TheMorningShow perfectly encapsulates the series, in that it purports to be about smart-looking people saying smart-sounding things yet it’s really just flabbergastingly stupid.

“Setting aside its radical conception of a Predator who’s basically Katniss Everdeen, nothing in BADLANDS is especially surprising. What makes the movie work is the caliber of its craftsmanship and the inventiveness of its design.”

Predator: Badlands review: All Riot on the Western Hunt - MovieManifesto
The latest Predator movie doesn't reinvent the sci-fi wheel, but it's a well-crafted actioner, with a welcome dose of buddy comedy.

Do I love HAL & HARPER because it’s funny and tender and sad, or do I love it because it needle-drops Waxahatchee into every episode?
November 13, 2025 at 6:24 PM
New piece: I mostly liked PREDATOR: BADLANDS. It’s a well-crafted action movie (and buddy comedy!) that understands its strengths and limitations, even if it lacks the thematic ambition of PREY.

Rhea Seehorn’s performance in BETTER CALL SAUL was remarkable in part for how restrained it was, so it’s fascinating that in #Pluribus she’s playing someone who’s literally the most emotionally volatile person in the entire world.
