According to CIA man Kermit Roosevelt, after the Shah’s return to Iran after the 1953 coup, the monarch credited God, his people & army, and the USA. Yet for the record, the Shah conveyed this sentiment to another U.S. official first — in tears.

Dec. 1953: Putting an end to their “unhappy interlude”, Iran and Britain jointly announce the resumption of diplomatic relations after their split in 1952. Upset over oil nationalization, the British, in concert with the US, had helped depose Mossadegh.
