The era of "buy once, own forever" is officially put on notice at Apple.

The new Creator Studio subscription locks the new features behind a $129/year paywall. While you can still "buy" apps like Final Cut Pro for now, the writing is on the wall.

How long until the "Buy" button disappears forever?

Although the numbers have been a lower this year, one thing remains constant: my King’s Cup app still continues to see a massive spike of downloads on New Year's Eve!

It's a clockwork trend and data continuously shows.

It makes me wonder, what other apps are people are looking for when gathering?

Felt that this is the year that AI took off, when I say AI I meant Claude Code where it has empowered me to tackle topics that are usually out of my reach.

Either it's not within my domain or just a whole different skillset.

World of consolidation continues in online education.

I've a soft spot for Udemy—it’s where I begun as an Android developer. It’s a strange contradiction: the free market is meant to drive competition, yet we get "winner-takes-all" scenarios.

Consolidation is rarely a win for the customers.

It's been 3 years since EA ditched the FIFA license.

They called FIFA's bluff! Rather than paying $150 million a year just for the name recognition, EA now gets to have it both ways.

They can’t advertise it as "FIFA," but everyone still calls it FIFA anyway, even though it’s technically EA FC.
EA is ditching the FIFA branding starting with next year’s soccer game
The FIFA series is getting a new name.

Proton Sheets Launches as Encrypted Alternative to Google Sheets
Proton Sheets Launches as Encrypted Alternative to Google Sheets
Proton today announced the launch of Proton Sheets, its end-to-end encrypted spreadsheet web application designed to offer a privacy-focused alternative to Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel. Unlike traditional spreadsheet tools, Proton Sheets encrypts all user data by default, including filenames and metadata. That means no one, not even Proton, can access the contents of users' spreadsheets. The company says the new tool is a response to growing concerns about Big Tech's data collection practices and the integration of AI features that may use proprietary business information for training purposes. Proton Sheets supports commonly used formulas, data visualization through charts and graphs, and real-time collaboration features. Users can import existing CSV and XLS files, which are then protected with encryption. The application includes access controls that let users manage who can view or edit files. "With the launch of Proton Sheets, we are not just closing the productivity gap – we are reclaiming data sovereignty for businesses and individuals alike," said Anant Vijay Singh, head of product at Proton Drive. "The reality today is that most spreadsheet tools come from Big Tech giants whose entire business models are built on exploiting user data. Now, with AI woven deeply into these platforms, the risks have escalated exponentially. Every keystroke, every formula you enter can feed into their AI training pipelines. This is an unacceptable trade-off. Users deserve a future free from hidden surveillance and invasive data mining. That's why we built Proton Sheets: a robust, privacy-first alternative that puts control, security, and trust back where they belong – firmly in users hands."The spreadsheet tool is available through web browsers and within the Proton Drive app. Following the release, Proton Drive now offers a range of productivity tools that includes email, calendar, documents, and spreadsheets, all with built-in encryption. More information about Proton Sheets is available on the Proton website. But, it does come in handy when you're doing research for buying something online to crawl reviews from different websites.

Could've been an app I suppose, rather than a dedicated browser.

WhatsApp Rolls Out Message Translation on iOS in 19 Languages
WhatsApp Rolls Out Message Translation on iOS in 19 Languages
WhatsApp has announced the rollout of its new translation feature, allowing users to translate messages into their preferred language directly within the app. The feature is launching gradually across iPhone and Android devices for one-on-one chats, group conversations, and Channel updates. To translate a message, simply long-press on the text and tap the "Translate" option. Users can then select both the source and target languages, with the ability to download language packs for future use. WhatsApp says that all translations occur locally on the user's device, in line with the app's end-to-end encryption that ensures even parent company Meta can't see message content. WhatsApp users on iPhone get translation support for over 19 languages, including Dutch, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese. Android users can access translation in six languages, but they do get an additional convenience feature: automatic translation for entire chat threads. Once enabled, all incoming messages in a conversation are automatically translated without requiring manual activation for each message. The rollout follows Apple's introduction of Live Translation for Messages as part of its iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe launch earlier this month. WhatsApp plans to expand language support in future updates, but it didn't say when the feature will come to WhatsApp for web or desktop.Tag: WhatsApp This article, "WhatsApp Rolls Out Message Translation on iOS in 19 Languages" first appeared on MacRumors.com Discuss this article in our forums
