More of the MS-LA theme with an Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys temminckii) from Louisiana. These large turtles dwell on river bottoms with jaws open, wiggling a fleshy pink worm-like protuberance inside their mouths to entice unwary fish. #herps #turtles #TurtleTuesday #NaturePhotography🌿

Night snorkeling in the redwoods to find an old friend. I posted that I was going to go look for this individual last week & I found the same one (I thiiink)! In the same deep pool I saw it in a year ago. A neotenic california giant salamander that never metamorphosed & never left the water. 🦎🌎

If everything goes according to plan tonight, I'll be spending some time in the water with this big fella - a neotenic california giant salamander. If I can't find him, hopefully some of his relatives will be in the waterways nearby. 🦎

They look like sliders and cooters, but chicken turtles are different altogether. This species specializes in disjunct seasonal ponds, and can spend MOST of the year out of water. Their thin shells allow them to travel on land more easily, but makes them vulnerable to predation. #turtles #wildlife
