The solar wind is still cooking! Bz is tanking to -20 nT now and wind speeds are extremely elevated > 800 km/s. The central U.S. could see more aurora tonight during substorm activity. Keep an eye on things, and I’ll update as the night goes on.

The X5.1 CME has impacted Earth with a strength of around 37 nT. This is a strong impact, but the Bz remains positive. It is possible we see the Bz turn south, so don't get upset about this. Conditions can quickly pivot during events, especially in the beginning of a CME passage.

SWPC has only ever issued a handful of G4 watches, and we have now for Nov 12 due to three incoming CMEs. Storming may begin on Nov 11 with the impact of the first CME with two more close behind it.
If the forecast verifies, much of the U.S. may see the aurora Tue/Wed nights.

G3 warning just posted by NOAA SWPC due to ongoing enhanced conditions (wind speed ~700 km/s and ~10 nT with mostly negative Bz). More substorms are possible tonight with extended auroral visibility to the central U.S. Stay tuned!

Seeing some great pictures of aurora from Ohio, Indiana, Idaho, Utah, Vermont, and other places around the northern tier and central U.S. tonight! The night is still not over even after this substorm happening currently. More is almost surely yet to come, and we will see more substorms.

When I was a kid, I thought Nautiluses were extinct because I saw so many ammonite fossils and illustrations of them in dinosaur books and stuff.
You could imagine how my mind was completely BLOWN when I first saw a video of one in elementary (or middle?!) school 🤯😂
