I’m proud to have some translations in this issue of the great journal MPT (poetry by Maria-Mercè Marçal and Maria Antònia Salvà), especially in the company of the best translators of Catalan working today.
![.S. scholar Janet Gold calls Clementina Suárez (1902-91) ‘the legendary matriarch of Honduran le ers, [who] scandalised Central American society with her bohemian lifestyle, her passionate woman-centred poetry, and her dedicated and unconventional promotion of art and literature’.
Born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Suárez lived in Mexico, Cuba, and El Salvador, before returning to Honduras later in life. Her 10 collections embrace half a century and an expansive array of themes, united by her energetic, distinctive voice. Best known as a poet, Suárez also organised creative communities of writers, painters, political dissidents, friends, and admirers.
Given Suárez’s stature and contemporary relevance, her work is under-translated. Janet Gold’s rigorous, beautiful 1992 biography, Celementina Suárez: Her Life and Poetry, includes full translations of some poems and excerpts from others. However, almost none of Suárez’s hundreds of poems have appeared in translation I fi rst read Suárez’s name in passing. In urging solidarity with Central American migrants, an op-ed in a Mexican newspaper (which I’ve since been unable to fi nd) reminded readers that any young person making the dangerous journey could be ‘the next Pablo Neruda or Clementina Suárez’. I was surprised and ashamed that I’d never heard of her. What started as a simple eff ort to educate myself about a notable author turned into a deep admiration for her work.
