Next up - The Last One by Rachel Howzell Hall, a fantasy romance, then back to This Way Up. I got a new Kindle for Christmas after 9 years, and it was quite the upgrade from a 2nd or 3rd gen Touch to a Paperwhite.

Spanning 1975-2001, it follows Patch, Saint, & Misty as they cope with the fallout from Misty’s near-kidnapping by a serial killer, thwarted by Patch, & Saint’s lifelong search for the killer. TBH could have been 300 pgs instead of 600, but it was full of twists & deeply human moments.

A famous actress summons her 3 estranged siblings to North Dakota - a soccer star, an award-winning author, & the one who raised them all in the physical & emotional absence of their parents. They took summer road trips every year but now barely text. Secrets are brought to light & healing begins.

A fantasy locked room mystery. 12 scions take a ceremonial journey. It is the last place Dee wants to be - his ex is there, and he has a huge secret. As the bodies pile up, he gains unlikely allies including a 6-year old who can turn invisible. It doesn’t end when the mystery does, & it is wild.

Sequel to Witch King - once again alternating between the present & the war 60 years in the past, and Kai’s relationships with his found family & the rebel leader in the war. An old ally who betrayed him continues to harass him, leading to a devastating final betrayal. A good cliffhanger for a 3rd.

Next up - revisiting another Martha Wells novel, System Collapse, the latest Murderbot book. I have only a vague memory of reading it the first time so safe to say it wasn’t my favorite in the series but it’s still Murderbot. It’s a direct sequel to the previous book rather than its own thing.

Kai is an immortal demon betrayed by someone close to him. The journey to find who & why leads him down a path he walked 60 years ago, with flashbacks to his time with a charismatic rebel leader and the beginning of their war to “unburn the world” after ruthless oppressors invade their land.

Next up - re-reading Witch King by Martha Wells ahead of the sequel coming out next month, Queen Demon.

7 people go on a pilgrimage to the planet Hyperion’s Time Tombs. On the journey they each tell their backstory to pass the time. This includes all the people they had sex with for reasons??? The book ends with them singing the Wizard of Oz song as they enter the TT. No plans to finish the series.

Previous couple of books - Mexican Gothic and Hyperion. I liked Mexican Gothic but ended up shelving it for a later time, it wasn’t bad and I do plan to pick it up again. See next post for Hyperion.

Two agents on opposite sides of the time war begin corresponding & gradually fall in love. The book alternates chapters between the agents finding the letters hidden across time & universes, & the letters themselves. We also see a mysterious Seeker trailing them, trying to learn their secrets.

I saw Maggie Stiefvater speak to promote the Raven Boys graphic novel & it was delightful. The format was her speaking to the characters, using the audience reading several envelopes “written” by the characters. She had hilarious props & unexpected backstories. I would see her again!

Obviously it’s hard to condense a big book into a graphic novel but they did a decent job. There were a few joke setups that didn’t include the punchline. I saw the book author speak & she was brutal about editing it down. The illustrations are gorgeous. I recommend reading the full novel first.

Next up - I’m partway through This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohter and Max Gladstone. I read a sample years ago but it kind of fell off my radar. After that, Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and then Hyperion by Dan Simmons.

Evie & Trystan continue to try to decipher the prophecy before the evil King Benedict does. A new urgency is brought because Kingsley is becoming less of a magical frog & more of a regular frog. There are betrayals large and small, and a diabolical cliffhanger. The slow burn finally reaches its end.

Next up … re-reading Nona the Ninth to tide me over until the graphic novel of The Raven Boys comes out next week, and the week after that will be the final in the A-word to the Villain trilogy (Assistant, Apprentice and now Accomplice). And any random holds l forgot about.

6 magicians, or medians, are recruited to spend a year vying for 5 spots in a secret society that controls the actual Library of Alexandria. At first they seemed like cliches & stereotypes but they are fleshed out by the end and you care more about their actions & motivations. 1st in a trilogy.

Oops forgot to post about the last book I finished

Next up for real … The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake. Another one that shows up on lists of books I will love! All I really remember about the description is Dark Academia, which will get me every time.

Next up … I don’t know! I had 4 books ready at Libby but delayed some of them because Ready Player One took me a bit, although I knew I would zip through Class Clown. Maybe another reading of one of the Locked Tomb books while I pretend that Alecto the Ninth might happen at some point.

I grew up reading all of the “books” that were actually compilations of his columns (and made it to the state speech meet with one of the columns), so there were large portions that I had read before but plenty that I hadn’t. He says that he always loved journalism & this comes through in every page
