Now more than ever, the EU should increase economic pressure on Russia - to deprive it of the resources it uses to wage war. Moscow still earns €450 m a day from fossil fuels, €200 m from sales to China alone (Source: @CREACleanAir „Russia Fossil Tracker“)

🧵With Russia stepping up attacks on Ukraine's civilians & critical infrastructure, and US Pres Trump now pointing to a "second phase" of sanctions against Russia, my thoughts on the upcoming 19th EU sanctions package remain relevant.

Earlier this month, the EU and the countries of Central Asia held their first collective summit in Samarkand.

Result: €12B pledged under Global Gateway.

But “connectivity” here means more than wires + roads. It’s vital for overlapping regional spheres of influence. A 🧵

We‘re getting there! EU policy people seem to be a bit slower to move, but this shows (again) that replacing X is possible.
Bluesky consolidating as key platform for science.

How could the EU Commission make room for more defence spending? This issue remains critical, Russia must be taken seriously as a threat to Europe, no matter how current negotiations develop. Here a colleague's thoughts and suggestions 👇
Because it fears a change of the EU fiscal rules, the Commission is resorting to a very far-reaching interpretation of the rules to make room for much more defense spending. This is a shortsighted mistake because it risks accidentally killing the rules altogether at the worst moment.

Here is why:

euobserver.com/eu-and-the-w... Thank you for inviting me to write this op-ed! With 3 years of full war & unpredictable transatlantic relations, I wish for a unified Europe that recognises #Ukraine’s strategic importance and takes action to enable further accessions, economic integration & security.
Is Ukraine's EU accession dependent on Zelensky being there?
The US is now discrediting the very people who have maintained a functioning state under full-scale war for three long years — adding to the long list of challenges Ukrainian society must navigate.

Recommend my colleague @brandonbohrn.bsky.social‘s thread on latest U.S. statements. Central: Europe is on its own. Conclusion: If smart, Ukraine‘s role and significance is recognized as integral part of European defence and secured by us Europeans.
Taken together, these developments should come as no surprise: an increasing U.S. shift away from Europe with mounting pressure on Europeans to step up on their own security and defense. More to follow this week at the MSC with VP Vance, Sp. Envoy R/UKR Kellogg in attendance.

Informative on the new Multiannual Financial Framework that will shape Europe into the 2030s. @lucasguttenberg.bsky.social focuses his thread on the challenge of trade-offs - in defence, prosperity, climate. Their significance for our shared future is a key reason to work united for a common goal.
So: The Commission is on the right track. It has outlined the choices that have to be made and a number of ways how things could work better. Member states should be supportive now. And then hopefully the Commission will follow through with an ambitious proposal that keeps in mind these risks.
