How about we worry less, as a society, about whether individuals might be cheating to get a disability accommodation or some help buying food, and more about whether extremely wealthy people and corporations are paying their fair share of taxes?

Last week, ICE arrested and separated a father and son after a routine check-in. Six-year-old Yuanxin had just enrolled in the first grade at an elementary school in Astoria. Now he's in custody, alone. ICE won't say where. This cruelty serves no one. It must end.

Every US military officer swears an oath when commissioned.

That oath is to NOT to obey all orders.
It is to preserve, protect & defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign & domestic.

Their 1st obligation is to obey the law & the law prohibits the deliberate killing of unarmed citizens.

Important to teach kids that you can admire the artistry and creativity of something while also deeply disagreeing with some of those artistic decisions. Considered critique is good, and stan culture has diluted so much of our cultural commentary

I hope someone draws this wonderful story about Tom Stoppard's Arcadia and the power of the arts to help us see things differently, to the attention of our Education Secretary. Do read it, it will lift your spirits.

He can't stay awake. Or walk. Or speak. I'm so sick of the GOP denial. The embarrassing flattery parades. The complicit press standing silent while he drones on incomprehensibly or insults colleagues who dare to question his lies. Or laughing obligatorily at his non-jokes. I'm just so tired of it.

No, MRI imaging of the chest and abdomen for *no* apparent reason is not routine.
And definitely *not* part of routine health screening.

I know someone who seems very sick but refuses to go to the hospital until her Medi-Cal approval comes thru. She cannot afford insurance. I told her they cannot turn her away, but she's too frightened of the bill if she's admitted, which she most certainly would be. Our country is so fucked up.

The DC shooting story is really getting to me because we literally trained this man as a child soldier for a death squad in a forever war and Stephen Miller et al want to blame it on other cultures? It's our culture, American culture, that killed that woman.

‘Remigration’ is a term that comes out of the European far right. Its use by the DHS account is a sign of democratic and epistemic collapse

Since another holiday is upon us: you don’t have to spend your holidays with abusive people who treat you like shit.

This country is already abusive enough. Please take care of yourselves. Get the divorce. Estrange from family if it helps you heal.

Keeping the peace is bullshit

The military has a duty to refuse unlawful orders, but Congress has a duty to remove from office a president and secretary who would issue such orders. There is something off about members of Congress talking about the former while refusing to say the latter, the part that's actually their job here.

DOGE has dismantled most of our government departments- and stolen all our personal information

My essay is up at @literaryhub.bsky.social about the late, great Lana Clarkson and other promising young women whose lives have been derailed or destroyed by men. It’s also about my childhood sexual abuse and how I have tried, and failed, to reckon with it.

All this talk about “reclassifying” what counts as a profession is a distraction from the real trend..women-dominated fields like nursing, teaching, social work, counseling, PA programs, physical therapy, are losing funding, while male-dominated sectors keep the capital flowing. This is Project 2025
