...Gordon Granger, who issued General Order No. 3 on June 19, 1865, which declared that all enslaved people in Texas were free. This is the basis of Juneteenth. The military doesn't want to celebrate a holiday that it helped to make possible.

Think about that for a moment.

Punditry abounding on Cleveland vs Trump. Consider, in conjunction, the oft-reposted Ann Telnaes cartoon (seen here); and Richard Hofstadter: “out of heartfelt conviction [Cleveland] gave to the interests what many a lesser politician might have sold them for a price.” So... one difference at least!

Re-reading the PM article of Jan. '17--Historians’ perspective on precedents to 1st Trump presidency. Wondering if they would stick with choice for Trump 2.0. I still say A. Johnson, esp. in light of great 2019 NYT op-ed by @profmsinha.bsky.social and ch. 6 of 2024 book by @democracyprof.bsky.social

after 20+ years avoiding social media I'm going in because it's a big year ahead; for example-100th anniversary of Scopes trial. History tells us William Jennings Bryan played the fool in that one. Looking at the U.S. today, I wonder if he won the war even if he lost the battle
