Dear Colleagues, I write to you today to seek your support to serve as Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Accountability in the 119th Congress. This is not a position I seek lightly. The responsibility of leading Democrats on the House Oversight Committee during Donald Trump's second term in the White House is a profound and consequential one. Now, more than ever, we must focus on the Committee's strong history of both holding administrations accountable and taking on the cconomic precarity and inequality that is challenging the American way of life. My experience on the Oversight Committee began under the legendary leadership of the late Chairman Elijah E. Cummings. Through his mentorship, I led a major investigation that resulted in the generic release of TruVada for PrEP medication a year earlier than expected, worked with my colleagues to win record refunds from defense contractors who had fraudulently price-gouged the public, exposed widespread corporate dumping of PFAS chemicals in overlooked communities, and worked with committee investigators to construct a line of questioning of Donald Trump's fixer Michael Cohen that led to a $355 million fraud verdict against the Trump Organization's businesses in New York. In addition to this investigatory work, the Committee also handled a groundbreaking legislative agenda that included House passage of prescription drug pricing legislation (H.R. 3) and large-scale campaign finance reform (H.R. 1). Under Chairwoman Carolyn B. Maloney's historic leadership as the first woman to hold the Committee's gavel, we worked relentlessly to highlight the crisis of gun violence, secure paid leave for federal employees, advocate for the Equal Rights Amendment, and win health benefits for 9/11 first responders. It is especially notable that she led the Committee through the tumultuous environment after January 6th and as the nation was gripped by the COVID pandemic. Most recently in the 118th Congress, I was honored whe… President Biden, and defang other efforts by the Majority to weaponize the Committee's investigatory power for partisan purposes often designed to amplify misinformation. We also successfully experimented beyond the traditional committee process with a series of shadow hearings to educate the public on a range of key issues that cut through the noise of the current information landscape and spoke directly to the American people. In addition to the sharp contrast we often drew between Democratic and Republican priorities, we have also taken full advantage of constructive opportunities for bipartisanship, such as our investigations into Pharmacy Benefit Managers driving up the costs of prescription drugs, and the Secret Service's failures to prevent an assassination attempt on President Trump. I've worked with the Republican Majority as the current Ranking Member for the Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources on the Natural Resources Committee to successfully move bipartisan legislation through the House of Representatives, including permitting reform. As Ranking Member for Oversight, I will continue to work across the aisle on constructive, shared interests that serve the American people whenever such opportunities arise. In the 119th Congress, Oversight Committee Democrats will face an important task: we must balance our focus on the incoming president's corrosive actions and corruption with a tangible fight to make life easier for America's working class. I know firsthand how the Majority uses their chaos to confuse, disorient, and distract the public's attention away from their disastrous agenda. We cannot and will not allow that to happen.
