Going with today’s alternate theme for #BirdOfTheDay a Rock #dove high up on the Rock of Gibraltar #bird #birding
January 24, 2026 at 7:03 PM
Today’s #tailup #BirdOfTheDay is this gray-headed swamphen which has a really characteristic behavior to flick up its tail to expose a patch of white feathers #bird #birding
January 22, 2026 at 6:13 PM
#birdoftheday then is #singing and I’ve gone for a fairly extreme closeup of a #robin absolutely going for it #bird #birding

Bottoms up!
I couldn’t resist taking a snap of these two yesterday at the #EdwinBForsytheNationalWildlifeRefuge . I think they’re perfect for the #BirdOfTheDay theme #TwoOfAKind. My best ID is that they are #mallards , but please correct me if I’m mistaken. #photography #nature

#TwoOfAKind for #BirdOfTheDay 🤔

Let’s have a pair of Eastern #bluebird arguing over a perch, a peaceful pair of Blue-winged #teal, a pair of (probably) Egyptian Goose #tattonPark, and because bsky doesn’t let me mix in a video… next post a couple of Limkin arguing over a mate

#BirdOfTheDay is looking for the #perfectPerch so two offerings, the first a #crow - lord of all it surveys. The second, a couple of goldfinches, where the on on the top clearly thinks the bottom one has *the* perfect perch…

This photo was taken in 1911 using glass plate technology by Herbert Ponting who was part of Scott's Antarctic expedition,

The composition and detail are exquisite with the band of white snow/ice creating a perfect frame around the two people and the ship in the distance

Iconic imo

for my #shortbeaks #birdoftheday #bird I give you a couple of Eurasian Robins #uk and because I'm still getting over coming home... a Myrtle #warbler and a Northern #waterthrush #Florida #us
January 16, 2026 at 11:03 AM
#Raptors for todays #BirdOfTheDay brings us a a proud looking #osprey posing on a fence-post, a (probably) red-shouldered #hawk on a telegraph pole, the only one looking like it is not in a man made environment.. but actually is a on a falconry-photography day - an absolute #borb of a #kestrel pair

So we have #LongBeaks for today’s #BirdOfTheDay and just back from Florida I’ve gone for a pair at the extremes of colouring - a camo #Limpkin and a show off Roseate #spoonbill

Interesting #BirdOfTheDay theme today, #solitude - this image of a White Ibis was the first one that popped into my head #ibis #bird #birding

I don’t even know how they could more forcefully assert that they don’t care about human lives — but ESPECIALLY don’t care about the lives of the poor and minorities most affected by industrial pollution — than to rewrite the cost-benefit calculations to explicitly set the value of those lives to 0.

For my #BirdOfTheDay image on the theme of flight we have an #Osprey hovering as it hunts above a marsh #bird #birdsinflight

For #Nature themed #BirdOfTheDay I've picked this close-view of a Tricolored Heron hunting, deliberately shot through the reeds. #bird #heron

For the #MoodyFaces #BirdOfTheDay I've picked this #BlueTit who has a stare that says I'm definitely in the bad-books for *something*.

very disappointing.

There is a code of conduct for Royal Society fellows - it's not a value judgement to say that Musk has contravened it!

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #FeathersAndForm so I've picked a Tricolored Heron coming in to land, in almost a dancer's form/pose, showing off the wing feathers - from Florida, near Shingle Creek, 28th Dec 2025
January 9, 2026 at 3:34 PM
The #BirdOfTheDay theme today is #ShortBeaks so we have
1) Pied-billed Grebe
2) Gray-headed Swamphen
3) Orange-crowned Warbler - getting that small beak around a big food item!
January 8, 2026 at 6:49 PM
Today’s #BirdOfTheDay themes are #FoodFinds and #Preening - So I give you a Tricolored heron tossing a fish to reposition it to swallow and a Roseate Spoonbill preening to get ready for the day
