I couldn’t resist taking a snap of these two yesterday at the #EdwinBForsytheNationalWildlifeRefuge . I think they’re perfect for the #BirdOfTheDay theme #TwoOfAKind. My best ID is that they are #mallards , but please correct me if I’m mistaken. #photography #nature
A pair of duck are tipped with their front halves under water while foraging. We see two white bellies topped with black tails and featuring four bright orange legs, but no feet. Those too are tucked under the cold, still water. Brownish winter reeds can be seen in the background.

This photo was taken in 1911 using glass plate technology by Herbert Ponting who was part of Scott's Antarctic expedition,

The composition and detail are exquisite with the band of white snow/ice creating a perfect frame around the two people and the ship in the distance

Photograph from 1911 taken by Herbert Ponting whilst with Scott's Antarctic Expedition The monochrome photo is taken from within a cave. The walls of the cave are made of ice. The cave entrance is in the mid distance with two figures standing looking out towards a distant ship. Between them and the ship there is first a 'beach' of ice before the sea itself. The ship could be up to 800 metres away What makes the photo so special is that where the figures are at the cave entrance there is a band of very white snow and ice (contrasting with the comparatively dark inside of the cave) that creates a stark framework in which the men and the ship are captured. It is made even more dramatic by the fact that the cave entrance is at least 30 metres high and is in the shape of a distorted elipse with the tail sloping off to the right at the top of the elipse The photo being in monochrome in a largely white environment makes the photographers skill all the more laudable

#Raptors for todays #BirdOfTheDay brings us a a proud looking #osprey posing on a fence-post, a (probably) red-shouldered #hawk on a telegraph pole, the only one looking like it is not in a man made environment.. but actually is a on a falconry-photography day - an absolute #borb of a #kestrel pair

I don’t even know how they could more forcefully assert that they don’t care about human lives — but ESPECIALLY don’t care about the lives of the poor and minorities most affected by industrial pollution — than to rewrite the cost-benefit calculations to explicitly set the value of those lives to 0.

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay themes are #FoodFinds and #Preening - So I give you a Tricolored heron tossing a fish to reposition it to swallow and a Roseate Spoonbill preening to get ready for the day
A tricolored heron in the reeds of a marsh bed half obscured but with neck and head clearly visible. Beak wide with a small fish being flipped into a better position to swallow A large bird with feathers ranging from a light, almost white pink to a deep magenta. Neck twisted around and using long spoon-ended beak to preen feathers on back against a background of green foliage.

A nice walk yesterday on holiday, and some nice birds spotted - a few here, a Tricolored Heron, hunting and an American White Ibis... resting.
