Please check out this fantastic review of @shiftingsovs.bsky.social by @alexspalinska.bsky.social in @iajournal.bsky.social 🥳
Many thanks to @alexspalinska.bsky.social for her generous review in @iajournal.bsky.social!

She writes: "Another notable strength is the book’s interdisciplinary and transhistorical orientation. ... The combination of analytical rigour with empirical detail strengthens the book’s relevance...
I wish people would do / understand basic source criticism.

Person X says Y happened ≠ Y actually happened.

What does person X actually know? Who are they talking to and for what purpose? How does that change the reliability of the information or our interpretation? etc.

🕯️🎉🥂 One year ago Shifting Sovereignties came out. We are very grateful for the reception the book has received from readers, at book talks in 5 countries on 3 continents, and in 2 very positive reviews. We look forward to seeing very soon what people are doing with our ideas in their own research!
Today "Shifting Sovereignties: A Global History of a Concept in Practice" is officially coming out.

When we started working on Shifting Sovereignties, friends suggested that sovereignty would be an irrelevant issue and out-dated concept by the time the book is being published... we truly wish they had been right. 🤷‍♂️

It looks like our book will remain relevant for 2026.
🇻🇪🧵 What a start into the new year. It unfortunately looks like discussions around sovereignty will be with us a little longer. There is some excellent analysis on the specific case, so we leave that to our colleagues who work specifically on US and Latin American history. 1/n

Now that the US is leaving the International Cotton Advisory Committee, will the headquarters be moved to a member state?

On a more serious note, how does this organisation "no longer" serve American interests? And how much do the US save...

So clever of US, UK and European universities, with ample encouragement from their governments, to have been closing down Area Studies, History, Languages and Politics & International Relations programmes, so clearly irrelevant to the world in the second half of the 21st century.
A key question is ‘whether Trump’s appetite for military adventurism will continue to spread. He has advertised designs on Canada, Panama, Greenland and the Gaza Strip. On Saturday, he implied Mexico was also in his sights’

Japan, which has synched its Chinese zodiac with the Western calendar has already entered the year of the fire horse 🔥🐎 which is a particularly ominous year to have daughters. Accordingly, in 1906 and 1966 birth rates were notably lower. Let's see how that develops in 2026!

British Pathé newsreels are a great teaching resource, with an easy-to-use database. Short lengths make them ideal for viewing and analysing in class, esp. for history students not used to working with film.

Fabulous shot of a Sudanese woman front and centre here, too, at :18 seconds. 🇸🇩🇸🇸🗃️🎥
🇸🇩 70 years ago today Sudan gained its independence from Britain and Egypt. May the coming years be characterised by the hope the Sudanese originally had for their independence in 1956.
