Interesting talk from @drmbothapsych.bsky.social, will make me think twice about what I'm putting into the world as an autistic autism researcher. Esp. interested in the media analyses, as a former media studies student I have more questions than my brain can process right now!

I always remember my MSc supervisor making me put something in my thesis about how much autism costs society. He said it was to make the project seem important, as if my reasons for doing the research, as an autistic person, weren't important.
The dehumanisation of autistic people in research plays out in the media as a dehumanisation of autistic children and their parents in narratives that relate autistic children to cost to society @drmbothapsych.bsky.social

This is important because I hear a lot of people say “correlation doesn’t equal causation” in regard to vaccines and autism, but there *isn’t even a correlation*.
Vaccines are an exception, because there was NEVER any epidemiological association – just speculation. But other factors, like maternal infection or something vague to do with the gut microbiome, or exposure to various chemicals have all seen positive associations that have not held up (3/n)

I feel like this is a weird metaphor for Audhd... the husky is in its own world, not noticing it's free then just wanders off looking at the shiny thing or whatever and the collie knows it needs structure and is keen to make everyone follow the rules!

Does neurotype affect social connection? Our new @PLOSONE paper finds autistic people report lower rapport in conversations, but it's not that simple. We found that awareness of who you're talking to is key!

I had a similar conversation recently with a clearly autistic adult who was too scared to seek diagnosis in the UK due to her immigration status.
If you want to know where we are on autism, I was just interviewing a child psychiatrist for a piece who told me that parents are afraid of getting their kids an autism diagnosis because they are afraid of the stigma and RFK Jr.'s talk about an autism registry.
