How much arsenic is in your drinking water? Maybe a lot less than there used to be, thanks to a 2001 change in the Safe Drinking Water Act! Read the paper, just out in ES&T: pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10..... @rff.org @cornellbrooks.bsky.social @lsuagcenter.bsky.social

🚨HRSA's Area Health Resources Files webpage is now down.

Fortunately, I built an archive of data 2000-2023 for a previous project, which can be accessed without restriction here:

data.mendeley.com/datasets/dwf...
County-level data on U.S. opioid distributions, demographics, healthcare supply, and healthcare access
This repository includes data from the Health Resources & Services Administration's Area Health Resources Files (years 2000-2001, 2004-2022), CDC Wonder, National Conference of State Legislatures, and...

Your regular reminder that the US air & water pollution laws passed in the 60s & 70s -- and the elaborate federal bureaucracy created to administer them -- constitute one of the most successful gov't interventions in history. WILDLY successful. The envy of the world.

Just like the 10-repeals-for-every-new-regulation EO, this 4-exits-for-every-new-hire EO does NOT guarantee improvements in efficiency. Like the buy-1-firework-get-15-free signs, dig just a little deeper & you’ll see it’s not the great deal the simple tag line would have you believe.
Breaking: Trump is signing an executive order intended to cut federal workforce

Order directs agencies to work with DOGE and says that after the current hiring freeze lifts, agencies will only be able to hire one new employee for every four who leave (with a few exceptions like law enforcement)

Fun to hear my colleague Michael Webber on On Point today doing his thing talking about energy and TX. He claims to be an engineer & policy guy but I think there might be an economist in there too. #econsky @npr.org

After so many examples I shouldn’t be surprised but still am when lobbyists convince politicians to make such foolish, not to mention costly, policy choices.
In an ideal world we would have a government statistical agency doing this work of counting college students

However Congress has banned the existence of a federal “unit record” data system bc higher ed lobbyists pressed them to

Wouldn’t want transparency and accountability after all

I was supposed to be back in LA today for the bar mitzvah of my son’s friend. Temple was in the evacuation zone until about 60 hours ago. Bar mitzvah took place today. Attended on Zoom (& cried through much of it in spite of not understanding Hebrew). The magic of LA has always been in community.

Advice for 2025 (which I may regret offering)...If you mostly said no when invited to review a paper in 2024, then say yes more in 2025. If you mostly said yes when invited to review a paper in 2024, then say no more in 2025. Yes, even if I invite you! #econsky

Feel like this can't be true but tried to buy some canned NA cocktails this morning at Central Market. Check out associate said she couldn't sell them because it was before noon on a Sunday. TX blue laws can't possibly apply to NA drinks, can they? @texastribune.org @austinchronicle.bsky.social
