The decade of England's Republic was one of the most innovative & to me inspirational periods of English history. On the back of the print revolution-women's political engagement-experiments in sciences-literature & sociopolitical thinking & religious noncomformity-including readmission of Jews etc.

#OTD 1641 the Treaty of London was signed, an agreement between England and Scotland formally ending the Bishops' Wars.

Charles I, deeply unpopular in the new parliament, was in a desperate search for new allies, as this #HistParl article explores:
Charles I in search of friends: government in crisis and the rewards of loyalty, 1640-1644 - The History of Parliament
Today we hear from Dr Vivienne Larminie, editor of our Commons 1640-1660 project, who discusses Charles I's attempts to secure loyalty by giving out peerages

My interest in the origins of English anarcho-communism started-probably like most people's-with reading Christopher Hill's classic The World Turned Upside Down during the late 1970's & subsequently the writings of Gerrard Winstanley himself.
The Diggers remain inspirational

Is 'Your Party' now the name of 21st century Levellers? An updated Agreement of the People seems to me to be overdue, a new rising seems to be in the offing.

Although my interest in early-modern history began with a partisan-pro-roundhead-approach to the English Civil Wars-it has broadened out into a deeper fascination with changing roles of women-the C17th industrial revolution-republicanism-print revolution-religion-dissent & socioeconomic evolution.

The late Professor Justin Champion grapples with the difficult question of whether Oliver Cromwell can be regarded as a hero or villain.
I have my own views on this question, but for now I'll open the debate with this short presentation.
