The big lesson I've taken from my mom's passing is: when people you don't expect show up or in unexpected ways, it's shown me a care that I didn't know people had for me.

Ty @danmall.bsky.social I'm going to do this for others.

I wrote an updated guide on which AIs to use right now, & some tips on how to use them (and how to avoid falling into some common traps)

A lot has changed since I last wrote a guide like this in the spring, and AI has gotten much more useful as a result. open.substack.com/pub/oneusefu...

📸 Portland folks —

My band’s looking for a local photographer for a few simple, artistic outdoor portraits — no instruments, just us. B&W or color.

Small budget, open hearts. Hoping to team up with someone emerging, building their portfolio. This week!

Know someone? Let’s connect.

I finally had some time over the weekend to try out some AI-powered coding tools while on a long bus ride home from a high school band trip I was chaperoning. I went in with low expectations. I came out with a working version of an app I had been tinkering with off and on for years—built in 10 mins.

Some of the most important skills for the future are the non-technical skills. Reading, critical thinking, curiosity, play, imagination, teamwork.

We must prepare kids to adapt and think critically (and imaginatively) about the world around them. Regardless of the directions technology takes.

I am so excited Heavyweight is back! 🥹🥹🥹
Everyone get real excited -- huge huge news -- @heavyweight.bsky.social is coming back. I am so so excited, I can't begin to tell you. Also, I am here to tell you that Jonathan Goldstein is the rare human being who is exactly like he is on the radio IRL. He's humble, kind, curious, and so so funny.
‘Heavyweight,’ an Acclaimed Narrative Podcast, Returns
Pushkin Industries, the podcast company that will release the show, is betting that documentary-style audio programs can still win an audience.

"Writing, drawing and painting are not just labor but processes of considering, reviewing and deciding exactly what I want to put out into the world."

Curation & discernment are human things.

The headline is a little much but there are good bits in here.

Generative AI is most useful for the things we care about the least
The technology is always on call and is quite competent. But it lacks the contemplation and attention to detail that yield great works of art.

Why do two different hosting providers claim to automatically convert images to WebP, but we never see any?
