I could count the other masked folks that I saw at #AAPM2025 on one hand, but there is a mountain of evidence that covid causes long-term issues, one of them being that it is oncogenic. I'm not sure why medical physicists aren't protecting themselves. 😷
🦠COVID & Flu infections can reactivate dormant breast cancer cells in the lungs, causing rapid metastasis in mice within days driven by IL-6.

🦀COVID infection in humans is also linked to metastatic breast cancer tumors in the lungs & higher risk of death. buff.ly/a27BulF

Thank you to Alison for inviting me to speak in this session, and thanks for moderating, Young! 😊💕
I moderated with Alison Roth in an #AAPM2025 session on “Freelance and side hustle”. It was an interesting session on different career paths as well as businesses that arise in our field. What a way to end the last day. @aapmhq.bsky.social @comp-ocpm.bsky.social #medphys @elekta.com

I'm SO proud of this group from the Accessibility SC under EDIC for their article that won the Michael D Mills Editor-in-Chief Award for excellence for an outstanding general medical physics article- "Improving access in medical physics residency programs for physicists with disabilities" #AAPM2025

With #AAPM2025 being 'local'(ish) for me, I've spent Monday and today in clinic so other folks could be at the meeting, but I DID put together this POV video from Sunday - navigating from the conference hotel to the meeting space in my power wheelchair. Check it out here:

A thread to highlight some sessions and posters at #AAPM2025 that include members of the Accessibility Subcommittee! (Not necessarily about ASC-related topics, just our work)

First up, Natalie Viscariello will give a talk entitled Creating Safe Space for Everyone: for All Levels of Ability.

It's really hard to tell at this point but I think years from now this will be one of the most destructive things that RFK Jr did at HHS.

Mammograms, FIT tests and colonoscopies, diabetes, blood pressure, depression screens. All of these are as widely available as they are because of USPSTF.
RFK Jr. has now officially stated that he will dismantle the United States Preventive ServicesTask Force (USPSTF).

This is an independent body of expert scientists who volunteer their time to review data and provide guidance to Americans on important things like cancer screenings.
Exclusive | RFK Jr. to Oust Advisory Panel on Cancer Screenings, HIV Prevention Drugs
The task force determines which preventive services insurers must cover at no cost to patients.

I'm looking forward to Advocacy Day at #AAPM2025! As a Baltimorean, I am close to this nonsense regularly, without the AAPM meeting to bring me to DC, but I'll always take an opportunity to meaningfully engage with my representatives.
It will be a very different vibe heading back to Washington DC again for #AAPM2025 as the Federal Government continues to attack science, reason, healthcare and speech. An opportune for members to engage with members of Congress and their staff on the advocacy day.

Starting #AAPM2025 off right, with a rock show at the Black Cat, iconic DC music venue. I'm seeing Faraquet, who I never thought I'd see live! They disbanded in 2001. (Where are my VERY elder emos 😂) 🤘

I have spoken to rooms full of nondisabled people and heard this ripple of tense laughter. I have told my own story of flipping a car on black ice and people straight up told me they would just drive more carefully.

They can’t handle the idea that you can’t wellness and responsibility your way out.
Sen. Tammy Duckworth just said on Colbert, "We should all live long enough to develop a disability," & the audience laughed uncomfortably.

I can tell you what they were thinking. It was "Not me. That would never happen to me."

& the underlying, unacknowlged premise was "b/c I'm better than that."

We need to be taking this seriously in medical physics and radiation oncology - this is going to be a driver of cancers for the next 20 to 50 years.

After ruling the NIH grant terminations illegal, Judge Young ended the hearing with an eye-opening speech.

“This represents racial discrimination, and discrimination against America’s LGBTQ community. That's what this is. I would be blind not to call it out. My duty is to call it out. And I do so.”
THIS IS IT! THIS IS HUGE!!

PLAINTIFF'S WIN!!

Judge Young rules that the NIH grant terminations at issue in these cases are illegal and therefore vacated. BOOM!
"This Court rules that the challenged directives . . . are arbitrary and capricious."

"They are of no force and effect."

"They are illegal and so are each of the terminations before this Court"
