Which means you're basically using it *like* a search engine, rather than the uncheckable (and thus, to me, useless) black box mode where you ask it something it spits out that might be right or wrong who knows.

The only thing I'll say about the AI/search engine discourse is that search engines (most notably google) have gotten appallingly bad. For certain queries I've had better results with Deepseek using its live web browsing function, but you have to get it to give you footnotes/links.
