Not as glamorous as #BlueCarbon ecosystems, the humble #sediments on the #seafloor off Norway accumulate and store a lot of organic #carbon.

We are now assessing the potential impacts of mobile bottom fishing on vulnerable organic carbon stocks.
🌊 New publication out!
Key message: Measuring dry bulk density is as important as measuring organic carbon content when estimating organic carbon stocks.
Shouldn't surprise, but needs to be said.

🌊While we currently lack a consensus on the magnitude of organic carbon remineralisation through bottom trawling, there is an urgent need to address the ongoing climate crisis.
Here we map hotspots and coldspots of organic carbon in Norway to guide marine spatial planning.

Improving marine sediment carbon stock estimates: the role of dry bulk density and predictor adjustments
Abstract. Continental shelves are critical for the global carbon cycle as they store substantial amounts of organic carbon (OC). Shelf sediments can also be subject to considerable anthropogenic press...

🌊 New study on the impacts of bottom trawling on organic #carbon in seabed sediments.

-Intense trawling has led to suppressed organic carbon stocks in some parts of the North Sea

-Recovery of stocks would take several decades

However, also a fair bit of criticism:
