UMN administration has not taken this simple step.
While we do not agree on all issues, I want to publicly thank UNC-CH Chancellor Lee Roberts for clearly stating today in Faculty Council that UNC cannot and will not sign Trump's Compact, because it raises irresolvable issues of academic freedom. That was important for faculty & students to hear.

Unsolicited advice for incoming PhD students:
Be wary of faculty who tend to shit-talk their colleagues in the presence of students. Don't allow yourself to be conscripted into their petty rivalries

Has anyone written on historians of philosophy's propensity to write in present tense about historical philosophical theories? There is some sort of Platonic assumption about the atemporality of the conceptual systems we are engaging with, right?

UGH the Institute for the Unity of Science had a relationship with both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as well as the American Association for the Advancement of Science. We cannot have one organization with separate relationships with distinct AAAS's. 😠

So, uh, reading through philosophy of science archives, and... does anyone know anything about Ian Hacking "beating up on a cop" in 1981? That sounds like a good story.

I gotta say I find a lot of AI discourse around higher ed very confusing. "if ChatGPT can write your essays is college even worth it?" did people think math teachers were assigning problem sets because *they* couldn't figure out the answers?

I swear to God, some Schilpp volume or another comes up in every letter sent among philosophers of science in the 20th century.

Reichenbach in a 1935 letter to Hempel on Popper’s _Logik der Forschung_. Describes the book as disregarding all problems with shocking naïveté and containing several substantial mathematical errors. Love spicy letters. 🌶️

this is the most one-sided two-option poll i can remember seeing. you could probably get 10 percent of americans to respond that installing your air conditioner backwards so that cold air blows outside will fix the environment
"Do you want America to be at war with Iran?"
No: 85%
Yes: 5%

MN House leader Melissa Hortman assassinated today and Senator John Hoffman shot. Grotesque.
Also call it like it is: this isn’t just a “murder” or “shooting.” This was a premeditated attempt to *assassinate* prominent politicians in the state.
