A statement of solidarity with those suffering in Venezuela from the World Communion of Reformed Churches

"the US will run Venezuela" is a wild thing to think. You've got communes, a military, militias, and paramilitaries to contend with.
The US will run Venezuela, Trump said, 'until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,' signaling an open-ended US role reut.rs/3Ne4l3T

This is actually insane. It should not be "welcome news" to you that the most psychotic president in history, and your official opposition, kidnapped a head of state.
My statement on the capture of the brutal, illegitimate ruler of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and need for a transition to democracy:

The @scottishgreens.org's are right.
The Scottish Greens have branded the United States' air strikes against Venezuela as a 'dangerous and cynical act of imperialism and aggression'

Marco Rubio is reportedly saying Maduro will stand trial in US courts.

Which means it’s now the US administration’s position that US courts can hold foreign presidents, but not the US president, accountable for crimes.

The unprovoked and deadly invasion of another country while its citizens sleep should appal all of us.

The fact that Venezuela has some of the world’s largest oil reserves makes this feel very familiar.

Folks, under no circumstances do you have to justify what the US is doing in Venezuela.
January 3, 2026 at 11:34 AM
Kind of wild to call for restraint when the US just kidnapped Maduro.
I have spoken with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and our Ambassador in Caracas. The EU is closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela.

The EU has repeatedly stated that Mr Maduro lacks legitimacy and has defended a peaceful transition. (1/2)

The most annoying outcome of Mamdani's victory is every vaguely left liberal trying to ride the coat tails of his win.

Sorry, the labour party ousted all of the Mamdani adjacent MPs already!

An incredible dunk from @ross-greer.bsky.social.

Instigating infighting like this is extremely uncomradely and I truly hate to see it.

I was absolutely garbage at school and tests until I started studying philosophy. It really did something for me to know that I could be annoying in a whole new way.

Abolish the SATs and the GRE.
I know a lot of brilliant faculty who got terrible grades in high school and only discovered an academic aptitude once they were studying something they cared about.
Like, not even GRE scores. SAT scores.

An elected official using their powers to hold their corrupt predecessor accountable?

You love to see it.
Mayor Mamdani has nullified every executive order issued by Eric Adams after he struck his corrupt bargain with Trump to secure dismissal of the indictment against him.

An older guy at my church has asked me 4 times if I want to come to the new year's day swim in the Clyde.

It's nice to be included, but this still sounds terrible.

Kind of wild that there are people in this world who would rather harass immigrants and exploit workers than walk up this cool-ass hill.
December 31, 2025 at 12:17 PM
Something I really like about hillwalking is that you just walk up the hill. There's no technique. You can't be bad at it.

Didn't make it to the top? Who is going to know? The sheep?

Very interesting, yet the class war is still raging.
Trump: "It's funny, I settled 8 wars. Some were going on for 35 years. And we got them settled in a couple of days. Some of them -- one was going on for 37 years. I settled it in one day. But this is a very complex one."
